PMI Offers Training And Tools To Assist Professionals In Mastering AI In Project Management

Brazil is in the 39th position in the Global Artificial Intelligence Index, which tracks the 3 forces accelerating the development of artificial intelligence in 62 countries: investment, innovation, and implementation. To drive the deployment of this technology and keep an eye on opportunities, the Project Management Institute (PMI), the leading global organization for the project management profession, is empowering millions of project professionals worldwide to adopt, embrace, and leverage artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and generative AI (GenAI). PMI is developing the tools, resources, and learning opportunities – including a free introductory online course titled “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers” – that project professionals need to harness AI-powered technology while preserving the human touch in project management.

According to McKinsey, GenAI and other technologies have the potential to automate work activities that currently consume 60% to 70% of employee time. However, tools cannot automate interpersonal skills, invaluable and much-needed skills that project managers bring to projects. Communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and strategic thinking – skills that PMI refers to as “power skills” – will remain crucial for project success. In fact, a PMI survey reveals that organizations that place a high priority on power skills are significantly better at completing projects that meet business goals. Moreover, they waste less investment due to poor project performance compared to the global average (4.8% vs. 5.2%) and much less than organizations that give low priority to technical skills (8.8%).

“I see an incredible opportunity to elevate the leadership role of project professionals in their organizations, thanks to AI-driven disruption,” said Pierre Le Manh, PMI’s president and CEO. “Project professionals are natural learners, problem solvers, innovators, and make things happen. Now is the time for us to lead the AI transformation in organizations.”

Project Management In Artificial Intelligence

To keep up with the latest developments in AI technology, project professionals must prioritize continuous learning. The Artificial Intelligence Resource Center in Project Management at PMI.org  is the destination for learning to navigate a new era of efficiency, insight, and growth. The page, complete with AI insights and learning opportunities, will be consistently updated with new and compelling research discoveries, thought leadership, industry analysis, academic research, and content and publications contributed by the community. The diverse data sources – including PMI’s vast community of academic partners, corporate partners, and millions of project professionals, combined with proprietary research – differentiate this content and make it the go-to resource for project professionals and organizations striving to harness these tools to improve project success.

PMI will publish two new articles in October 2023. The key findings from these articles include:

  • Project Managers Can Leverage AI To Boost Project Productivity And Enhance Power Skills. According to the 2023 PMI Global Annual Project Management Survey, the top three ways in which project managers are using AI are reporting (34%), decision support (33%), and communication (26%). While AI can take on productivity tasks such as planning and budgeting, project managers are also using AI as a tool to enhance human interactions and strategic decisions.
  • The Adoption of AI Will Only Increase, Therefore Project Managers Need To Rapidly Equip Themselves To Take Advantage Of This Huge Career Opportunity. The 2023 PMI Global Annual Project Management Survey found that 82% of leaders believe that AI will have at least some impact on how projects will be executed in their organization over the next five years. However, a groundbreaking PMI survey on Customer Experience (CX) found that only 18% of project managers report having broad or good practical experience with AI tools and technologies, and 49% have little or no experience or understanding of AI in the context of project management.
  • Creating Organizational Resilience, Leveraging Technical Skills, And Enhancing Teams Will Help Organizations Stay Competitive. AI is a major shift that requires transformation within companies. While technical skills are an important part of widespread AI adoption, they are only one piece of the puzzle. For AI to work, organizations need resilience.

Free Course

To help project professionals gain the foundational knowledge needed to master AI in project management, PMI launched a free course to serve as an entry point for learning titled “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers.” It provides students with practical knowledge for using AI that they can apply immediately in their projects. Upon completing the course, professionals will receive 5 PDUs and a digital badge issued via Credly.

This course is just the beginning. PMI will continue to release learning content focused on AI in project management, all created for project professionals by project professionals. The PMI community will test the content, ensuring that it reflects the experience of project professionals with relevant experience in using AI in project management.
