Merchant who has preserved the Michael Jackson House for 17 years must leave the property on July 23, while appeal is still pending in court.

One of the most well-known tourist spots in Pelourinho faces an uncertain future. Carlos Alberto dos Santos received an order to vacate the property linked to Michael Jackson’s visit to Salvador.

The merchant has worked at the location for 17 years. During this period, he has preserved images, objects, and references related to the so-called King of Pop.

The eviction is scheduled for Thursday, July 23. The defense has filed an appeal, but the planned departure remains in place.

Michael Jackson filmed a historic video in Pelourinho in 1996

Michael Jackson visited Salvador in 1996 to film scenes for the video “They Don’t Care About Us” in Pelourinho.

The production made the property’s balcony known worldwide. Over the years, the address began to attract visitors interested in the artist’s visit to Bahia.

The song depicts situations experienced by marginalized populations. The filming also marked the cultural history of the Bahian capital.

Since then, the region has been constantly visited. The property, in turn, has become one of the tourist references of the Historic Center of Salvador.

Merchant maintained tributes to the singer for 17 years

Carlos Alberto dos Santos set up a small business in the property and began offering products related to Michael Jackson’s career.

According to the merchant, his stay always occurred with the owner’s permission. However, the recently received notification ordered him to leave the space.

The worker claims he took care of the images and references to the singer throughout these years. The eviction, therefore, raises doubts about the continuation of the tributes.

The land does not belong to the merchant. Even so, Carlos was responsible for preserving the space and maintaining the address’s connection with the international star.

The Michael Jackson House may cease to operate in the manner known to tourists. The definitive fate of the site has not yet been informed.

Visits to the balcony began after the singer’s death

The death of Michael Jackson, in 2009, increased fans’ interest in the property used in the recording.

Visitors began to request access to the balcony shown in the video. Carlos then started allowing entry to the space.

The fee charged for the visit was R$ 10. The activity helped the merchant earn his livelihood from the so-called Michael Jackson House.

For 17 years, Carlos also kept the building’s connection with the singer alive. The space became established as a sought-after attraction in Pelourinho.

The court notification does not clarify whether the address will remain open for visits. The preservation of references to the artist has also not been confirmed.

Eviction order set for July 23

Information released by g1 Bahia indicates that the owner’s identity was not revealed. The report identified the owner only as a foreigner.

Carlos’s defense filed an appeal against the decision. Even so, the departure remains scheduled for Thursday, July 23.

Lawyer Guilherme Sales stated that the decision was made in the first instance. The process, according to the defender, is still ongoing.

The legal team stated they respect the decisions of the Judiciary and the work done by the press. Public demonstrations must also follow ethical and procedural limits.

The future of the Michael Jackson House in Pelourinho remains undefined. The continuation of the tourist spot and tributes to the singer still depends on the next developments in the process.

Do you believe that the Michael Jackson House should be preserved as a cultural and tourist heritage of Salvador, even after the departure of the merchant who took care of the space for 17 years?
