The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) Approved an Investment of R$ 59 Million to Support WEG in Its Latest Project for the Development of a 7 Megawatt (MW) Wind Turbine.

According to the announcement made this Thursday, this will be the largest equipment available in the Brazilian market, representing a significant leap from the platform currently produced by WEG, which has a generation capacity of 4.2 MW.

With a rotor blade diameter of 172 meters, the new wind turbine, which is designed for wind energy generation, is 50 meters longer than the maximum length of a football field. According to WEG, the serial production of this cutting-edge equipment will begin in late 2024 at the company’s manufacturing complex in Jaraguá do Sul, Santa Catarina.

The Need to Increase Turbine Power Was the Main Driver of This New Development

The use of higher power turbines makes energy generation in parks more efficient, allowing ventures to have the same installed capacity with fewer machines in operation and less land occupied.

The new technology used in this WEG equipment allows for optimization in component weight, flexibility in transportation and installation, as well as operational reliability. And being adaptable to different energy grids, the expectation is that the equipment can be exported to various countries.

BNDES Aims, Through the Financing of This Project, to Foster the Production of More Efficient Wind Turbines, Aligning with the New Strategic Guidelines Set by the Bank

According to the Director of Productive Development, Innovation, and Foreign Trade at BNDES, this movement aims to contribute to building a more prosperous, green, digital, and inclusive economy.

Although the wind industry is going through a difficult time, with high demand and rising costs associated with raw materials, unable to pass them on to customers due to contracts priced in the past, manufacturers in the sector continue to invest and seek new technologies. In Brazil, although General Electric and Siemens Gamesa have announced the suspension of their local operations in recent months, WEG remains steadfast and bets on this new project to help boost the wind energy market.

This announcement represents an important advance for WEG and for the Brazilian industry, which will be able to rely on a new platform for wind energy generation. With the production of this new model, the expectation is that there will be an improvement in the performance of wind farms, which could drive the market and new investments in the sector.
