Brazil Joined the CEM Hubs, International Public-Private Platform, Pioneering and Cross-Sectoral, Jointly Led. With the Support of Itaipu Binacional.

The Brazilian government is participating in the Clean Energy Marine Hubs Initiative (CEM Hubs), an international partnership between energy communities, maritime and financial.

The CEM Hubs are a cross-sectoral public-private platform, led by a working group from the industry composed of CEOs and energy ministers, under the banner of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM).

Coinciding with COP 28 of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from November 30 to December 12, 2023, the South American country joined the Clean Energy Marine Hubs Initiative, alongside Uruguay, Norway, and Panama, as well as founding partners, United Arab Emirates and Canada.

Clean Energy Marine Hubs Initiative (CEM Hubs)

Brazil recently announced that it will host CEM15 next year, combining the ministerial meeting with the G20 presidency. According to the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, the 15th Ministerial Meeting of the CEM and the 9th Mission Innovation Ministerial Meeting will be held in the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu in September 2024, back-to-back with the G20 Energy Transition Ministerial Meeting (ETMM) and with the support of Itaipu Binacional, a binational entity equally owned by Brazil and Paraguay focused on clean and renewable energy.

The country also decided to become an official member of the Transforming Solar workstreams, led by Germany and IRENA, and the Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative (IDDI), co-led by the United Kingdom and India. The CEM Hubs initiative falls under the CEM, which will formalize a work program in the first quarter of 2024, alongside the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), with supporting organizations like the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Global Maritime Center for Decarbonization (GMCD), and other industry partners.

The CEM Centers workstreams will establish how energy centers will be financed, to reduce the risk of investments in infrastructure construction, how security will be addressed, and how these new centers can operate as a network instead of a series of bilateral trade routes for export and import,’ said Stuart Neil, Director of Strategy and Communications of the ICS.
