The nuclear fuel is manufactured in Resende, Rio de Janeiro by INB. For safety reasons, the date of delivery has not been disclosed and is kept confidential by the Brazilian state-owned company.

The trade relationship between Brazil and Argentina regarding nuclear fuel began in 2016, with the export of the first shipment of 4 tons of the product to Combustibles Nucleares Argentinos (Conuar).

Currently, Argentina has three nuclear reactors generating about 5 percent of the electricity in the country, with the first starting operation in 1974.

The neighboring country is also developing a small prototype of a power reactor, the CAREM25, with an eye on the trend of modular reactors.

Even with the global crisis caused by the coronavirus, Argentina claims it is ready to resume the construction of CAREM-25 and also a dry storage facility for used fuel, as well as the renovation of the Atucha 1 nuclear plant.

“We are convinced that emphasis should be placed on the continuity of our nuclear program and the generation of nuclear energy as one of the energy reserves. This sector is fundamental and vital to the interests of the country. In times of crisis like this, the importance of the role of the state arises, and in the case of nuclear generation, it shows energy resilience, in light of the current indicators,” said Sergio Lanziani, Minister of Energy of Argentina.
