Brazilian Couple’s Move to Australia Involves Career Change, Jobs Outside Their Field, Family Adaptation, and a Routine Shared on Social Media.
Exchanging a career in a multinational, an office routine, a car, a home, and proximity to family for cleaning, deliveries, and moving furniture in another country might seem difficult to justify based solely on resume credentials.
This was exactly the change that Victoria and Gabriel Magliani made when they left Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo, to restart their lives in Gold Coast, Australia, in 2023.
In an interview with SBS in June of that year, the couple stated that their choice was driven more by the kind of routine they wanted to build than by professional status.

Victoria began balancing her studies with cleaning jobs, while Gabriel switched from advertising to moving and delivery services, and they both indicated that they were able to cover rent, school fees, internet, and other expenses with this new setup.
Their story didn’t stop after the first few months of their transition.
By July 2024, more than a year after arriving, reports showed Victoria and Gabriel still living in Gold Coast and maintaining their profile “The Rootless Couple,” which had already gathered over 50,000 followers on Instagram.
At that time, they reiterated that they had no plans to return to Brazil.
Couple Left Stable Careers to Start Over in Australia
Before moving to Australia, Victoria worked as a tax analyst for a multinational company and had built her professional career on the São Paulo coast.
Gabriel also had an established career in advertising, and the couple maintained what they later described as a “proper” life.
The phrase didn’t imply that everything was wrong in Brazil.
On the contrary: they both had family nearby, jobs, personal belongings, and a predictable routine, but they told SBS they began to desire a different kind of life.
“We had a complete life there in Brazil. Mother, grandmother, family, our professional careers,” Victoria shared in the 2023 interview.
The move required them to accept that the resume they built in Brazil wouldn’t necessarily define the first jobs they found on the other side of the world.
At that time, Victoria had a student visa in Australia, was taking English classes, and worked in cleaning; Gabriel came as a dependent and did deliveries and furniture moving.
For him, moving furniture brought a physically demanding routine compared to his previous profession.
Victoria also described cleaning as a job that demanded both physical and mental effort, in addition to supplementing her income with deliveries whenever she had time outside of classes.
Why Gold Coast Was Part of the Brazilian Couple’s Plan
The choice of Gold Coast was not accidental.
Victoria and Gabriel came from Praia Grande and said they were looking for a place where they could still maintain a close relationship with the beach, warmth, and outdoor activities, without facing as drastic a climate change as found in other parts of the world.
In an interview reproduced in 2024, Victoria explained that the climate was one of the most significant factors in their decision.
The couple stated they preferred warmer temperatures and sought an international experience that, in this aspect, reminded them of the Baixada Santista.
Another surprising element for them after arriving was the presence of Brazilians and immigrants from various nationalities.
Gabriel reported meeting people from different backgrounds in the city, while Victoria said that hearing Portuguese in the streets helped lessen the feeling of distance from Brazil.
Safety also repeatedly came up in their accounts, but as the couple’s personal perception of the life they were leading in Gold Coast, rather than as a statistical comparison presented by them.
In the interview with SBS, Gabriel cited as an example that Victoria could return from classes around 9:30 PM and feel safe walking at night, which they considered an important factor in their decision to stay.
Cleaning, delivery, and moving furniture became part of their new routine
The professional change sparked reactions that the couple did not expect from friends and acquaintances.
When Victoria and Gabriel began showcasing their routine on social media, comments about the type of work they were doing in Australia started to resurface.
Victoria mentioned hearing phrases from people saying they wouldn’t leave a profession in Brazil to “clean floors” in another country.
According to her, other messages questioned why someone would study for years only to work in cleaning in Australia.
It was in this context that much of the content published by “The Rootless Couple” emerged.
Rather than hiding the work involved in their adaptation, the couple decided to share cleaning, moving, delivery, studies, and common situations of someone trying to establish a new routine away from family.
“We’ve often heard ‘I wouldn’t go to Australia to work in a dead-end job,'” Victoria told SBS.
The term appeared in comments received by the couple, but the Brazilians themselves rejected this classification, stating they saw these services differently after their experience in the country.
This difference in perception became a central part of their story.
For Victoria, working in cleaning should not be regarded as inferior simply because it is distant from her previous education, while Gabriel stated that the experience needed to be evaluated by the overall life they were building together.
Cost of living and work marked their adaptation in Australia
However, the experience was not depicted by the couple as a permanent vacation.
In later accounts, Victoria stated that the first months demanded an intense workload and that, for many immigrants, the so-called quality of life does not appear immediately after landing.
“We hardly experience quality of life in the beginning because you work from Monday to Monday,” Victoria stated in a statement reproduced in a 2024 report.
According to their account, they had already prepared to accept jobs different from those they held in Brazil and knew that free weekends could become less frequent during the adaptation phase.
In the original interview, Gabriel mentioned that their earnings allowed the couple to maintain their main commitments, including rent, internet, and school.
However, this did not mean that the move had eliminated difficulties; Victoria summarized the experience by saying that the choice was tough, but their previous life also had its own challenges.
In both of their evaluations, the difference lay in the reason they accepted to face this stage.
Work had ceased to be viewed in isolation and had become part of a larger project to live abroad, study, explore a different culture, and test a routine they had chosen for themselves.
The Rootless Couple was born from curiosity about the move
Friends and family started asking so many questions about the move that Victoria and Gabriel decided to turn their experience into content.
In the June 2023 interview, the profile had already surpassed 45,000 followers on Instagram and was approaching 10,000 on TikTok.
Just over a year later, Brazilian media continued to follow the couple in Australia.
In July 2024, reports about an unexpected encounter with a large spider in their apartment bathroom showed they were still in Gold Coast and indicated more than 50,000 followers on Instagram.
The episode gained attention because Brazilians often joked online about Australia’s wildlife.
After about a year and three months in the country without encountering a spider of that size indoors, Victoria described the moment as a kind of “baptism” into life in Australia.
Although the encounter with the animal had no direct relation to their professional decision that brought them to the country, it illustrates how the journal initially created to explain their move evolved into a broader record of their routine.
Work, cost of living, animals, cultural differences, and domestic situations began to share space in the content published by the couple.
