After Apple Announces Partnership With OpenAI, Elon Musk Threatens to Remove All Devices of the Brand From His Companies, Including Tesla and SpaceX
On Monday (10), Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, turned Apple into his new target. In a blunt post on his profile on the social network X, Musk stated that he will remove all Apple devices from his companies if the tech giant integrates OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) into its systems. This announcement came after Apple revealed the partnership during its annual event, the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), according to Forbes.
Elon Musk and Apple: A New Tech Dispute
“If Apple integrates OpenAI into its systems, all devices of that brand will be banned from my companies. This is a security violation that I will not accept,” Musk declared on his profile on X. Musk’s relationship with OpenAI is complex: he was one of the co-founders of the company in 2015 and remained there until 2018. Since then, Musk has criticized OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing the company of violating privacy issues.
The tension between Elon Musk and OpenAI is not new. After leaving the company, Musk frequently threw jabs at Altman and criticized the direction OpenAI took. In response, Musk founded his own AI startup, xAI, in July 2023. In March of the same year, he registered X.AI Corp in Nevada. By the end of 2023, this company announced the launch of a chatbot for the social network X, also owned by Musk.

Announcements by Apple at WWDC
The announcement that triggered Elon Musk’s reaction occurred during the opening of WWDC 2024, in Cupertino, California. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, kicked off the event highlighting the importance of developers to the company. “WWDC is our time to celebrate developers. I hope you are as excited as I am,” Cook said.
The first announcements included updates for AppleTV+, Apple Vision Pro, iOS 18, MacOS, and other operating systems in the Apple ecosystem. The second part of the event was reserved for AI tools, which will only be available for iPhones with A17 Pro and A18 chips onwards. This means that only the 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max models, and future releases, including the 16 line expected in September 2024, will be able to use these new features.
Impacts and Reactions
Elon Musk’s threat could have serious implications for Apple, given the size and influence of Musk’s companies in the tech market. Tesla and SpaceX, together, employ thousands of Apple devices, and removing these devices would represent a significant blow. Additionally, this dispute highlights the growing concerns over privacy and security in the age of artificial intelligence. Musk, known for his firm stance on these issues, seems willing to use his market power to influence the decisions of other large corporations.
