BYD Closed A New Partnership With Shell To Expand Its Electric Car Charging Network In China And Europe.
BYD and Shell signed a strategic cooperation agreement to help accelerate the energy transition and improve the charging experience for BYD’s electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) customers. The Warren Buffett-backed automaker and the leading oil and gas company plan to form a joint venture to develop electric vehicle charging stations in China, starting with a network of over 10,000 charging points in Shenzhen before expanding to more locations across China.
BYD Electric Car Customers Will Have Access To Over 200,000 Shell Refueling Points
BYD’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will also be able to access 275,000 charging stations throughout the Shell network in Europe. The Shell expects to operate over 500,000 electric vehicle charging points worldwide by 2025. The partnership will begin in China and Europe, before expanding to other regions of the world, according to the statement.
Shell and BYD also plan to collaborate on global research and development in the areas of battery performance and advanced charging. “The automotive industry is undergoing significant changes, and the development of new vehicles is an irresistible trend,” said Wang Chuanfu, president of BYD, in a statement.

BYD Has Plans For The Future Including Oil Company Shell
“BYD is willing to cooperate with Shell and seize the historical opportunity of new electric vehicles by providing consumers with high-quality charging services and next-generation vehicles while creating vital development opportunities in battery cells for the future,” said Chuanfu.
BYD, whose initials stand for “Build Your Dreams” and was founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer, began manufacturing cars in 2003 and has evolved into the largest electric vehicle manufacturer on the continent. The automaker sold around 600,000 electric vehicles last year and achieved a cumulative production and sales volume of over 1.5 million units, according to the company.
“Shell has significant ambitions to expand our mobility business in China and help drivers globally decarbonize by switching to electric vehicles. This partnership represents a significant step in both ambitions,” said István Kapitány, Executive Vice President of Shell Mobility, in a statement.
Shell And BYD Want To Build Hubs With Decarbonization Solutions Worldwide
In addition to charging stations, there is also the possibility of building joint Shell-BYD EV hubs in major European markets. Both companies highlighted that they would like to offer various products related to electric vehicles and energy, such as dynamic tariff scheduling, solar integration, home batteries, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging, and much more.
Here is the official list released by Shell:
- For private and commercial customers of BYD electric and hybrid vehicles, Shell and BYD will form a pan-European Mobility Service Provider (MSP) partnership, providing them with membership access to 275,000 charging points through Shell’s roaming network. Both Shell and BYD will also jointly develop fleet solutions and deposit charging services for BYD customers in Europe.
- Both companies will seek to provide integrated home energy solutions, such as dynamic tariff scheduling, solar integration, home batteries, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging in different regions of the world.
- Both parties will explore opportunities to build Shell-BYD EV hubs in major European markets, offering customers the experience of BYD’s premium models and advanced new era vehicle technologies, as well as continuous charging and digital services developed jointly by both parties for an enhanced user experience.
- Both Shell and BYD will indicate to customers participation in the Accelerate to Zero (A2Z) decarbonization program, which allows corporate fleets to reduce emissions to zero and net zero in various European markets.
- Globally, Shell will seek to help BYD generate cost savings and better hardware performance with Shell E-Fluids and coolants.
- Both Shell and BYD intend to collaborate on global research and development in the areas of battery performance and advanced charging.
For Shell, China is one of the strategic directions in the transition to electric vehicles, so a partnership with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD is a strategic move for the future, including electric mobility solutions.
