The Recent Damage to Two Submarine Cables in the Baltic Sea, Considered a Probable Act of Sabotage, Raised Concerns Not Only in Europe but Also in Brazil. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius Described the Incident as a “Hybrid” War Tactic, Intensifying Discussions About Global Internet Infrastructure Security.

Within 24 hours, two optical fiber submarine cables were severed: one connecting Germany to Finland and another linking Sweden to Lithuania. Pistorius stated that “no one believes these cables were cut accidentally,” suggesting a deliberate action, possibly related to geopolitical tensions involving Russia.

NATO, including new members such as Sweden and Finland, is on high alert due to several sabotage attempts attributed to Russia. Previous incidents include attacks on pipelines and critical infrastructure, raising concerns about the security of submarine cables.

Although the damaged cables are located in Europe, the incident serves as a reminder of the global vulnerability of submarine cables. But which ones could directly impact Brazil?

Which Submarine Cables Can Affect the Internet in Brazil?

Brazil is connected to the world through more than 15 submarine cables. Some of the main ones are:

Monet: connects Brazil to the United States, with landing points in Santos (SP) and Fortaleza (CE).

SACS (South Atlantic Cable System): links Brazil to Angola, connecting South America to Africa.

GlobeNet: connects Brazil to the US, Venezuela, Bermuda, and Colombia.

BRUSA: extends from Rio de Janeiro to Virginia Beach, USA.

These cables are essential for international internet traffic. A break in any of them could cause slowdowns, interruptions in online services, and significant economic impacts.

Do Submarine Cables Affect Data Centers and Hosting in Brazil?

Yes, the submarine cables are vital for the operation of data centers and hosting services in Brazil. Companies like Equinix and Ascenty rely on these cables for high-speed international connectivity. Streaming services, e-commerce platforms, and cloud applications could be affected in the event of cable failures.

Can the Cable Broken in Europe Affect Brazilian Providers or Hosting?

Location Where the Cables Pass in Europe

Directly, no. The damaged submarine cables connect European countries to each other. However, the incident highlights the possibility of coordinated attacks on critical infrastructure.

If similar tactics were employed against cables serving Brazil, internet providers and hosting companies could face serious issues.

What Is Being Done?

After the attacks, NATO countries have intensified surveillance of their underwater infrastructure. In Brazil, the Navy has the Navy Nuclear Program (PNM), which includes initiatives to protect underwater communication lines.

Additionally, private companies are investing in monitoring and redundancy systems to minimize the impacts of possible damage.

Why Should Brazil Worry?

Digital Dependency: With the increase of remote work and the digitization of services, internet reliability is more crucial than ever.

Economy: Sectors such as finance, trade, and industry depend on stable connections to operate.

National Security: The digital infrastructure is considered strategic for the country’s sovereignty.

The damage to submarine cables in the Baltic Sea is a warning for Brazil and the world about the importance of securing communication infrastructures.

Although the European incident does not directly affect the country, it reinforces the need for vigilance and investment in protection. In an increasingly connected world, ensuring the integrity of these cables is essential to keep the economy and society running without interruptions.
