Boomerang Field, in the Santos Basin, Covers More Than 300 km² and Could Change the Global Energy Landscape

The British BP announced on Monday the largest oil and gas discovery in the company in 25 years, located off the coast of Brazil. The Boomerang field, situated in the Santos Basin, covers more than 300 km², an area five times larger than Manhattan, and could mark a new milestone in pre-salt exploration.

According to the company’s official statement, this is the largest find since 1999, even surpassing Shah Deniz in the Caspian Sea. The field was won by BP in an auction held by the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) in 2022, within the production sharing model.

What Is the Importance of BP’s New Discovery?

The Boomerang field is located about 400 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and is wholly owned by BP. The area was acquired during the 1st Permanent Offering Cycle of the ANP, under the sharing regime, in which a portion of the production profits is allocated to the Union. BP’s winning proposal offered 5.9% of oil profits to the Brazilian government.

The discovery, which includes natural gas, condensate, and oil, is still in preliminary evaluation stage. The company warns that, while the signals are promising, there are high levels of CO₂ in the reservoirs, which could raise processing costs and impact the economic viability of the project.

What Changes for Brazil With the Discovery of the Boomerang Field?

The Boomerang field could become a strategic asset for the country, both in terms of production and revenue. Due to its location in deep waters, its operational startup may take between four to ten years, according to industry experts. Nevertheless, the announcement strengthens Brazil’s positioning as one of the global frontiers for oil exploration.

Additionally, the sharing model ensures that a portion of the excess oil (profit oil) is returned for the direct benefit of Brazilian society, increasing the State’s participation in the earnings from exploratory activities.

Are There Risks or Challenges for Explorating the Field?

Yes. The main challenges involve the high levels of carbon dioxide found in the reservoirs. This requires specialized infrastructure for separation and reinjection, which can raise operational costs. BP has not yet disclosed forecasts for estimated volume or production startup date, but stated that the process is in the seismic evaluation and drilling testing stage.

Another point of concern is the pressure from investors on BP. The American fund Elliott, known for demanding strategic changes in the companies it invests in, recently entered the oil company’s capital. The company is also under scrutiny following rumors of a possible merger with Shell, which could impact its investment policy.

How Does This Discovery Compare to Others in BP’s History?

According to BP itself, the last discovery with a comparable impact was in 1999, in the Shah Deniz field, in the Caspian Sea, which contains about 990 billion cubic meters of gas. The new discovery in Brazil marks a significant return of the company to global exploratory prominence, this time in Brazilian territory.

The discovery of the Boomerang field solidifies Brazil as a rising energy power, capable of attracting giants like BP even amid the global energy transition. Despite the technical challenges, the project has the potential to generate jobs, revenue, and strengthen the national energy balance in the coming decades.

Do you believe this discovery strengthens Brazil’s prominence in the energy sector? What impacts could this bring to the country in the coming years? Comment below with your technical opinion or experience in the sector — we want to hear from those who follow this closely.
