Created By A Neuroscience Startup, The 2.7 Kg Case Makes Phone Use Tiring, Requires Allen Key For Removal And Promises To Reduce Screen Time By Half Due To Constant Physical Fatigue

A 2.7 kg phone case, created by a neuroscience startup, promises to help those trying to control smartphone addiction. Despite being inconvenient, the accessory is designed to cut screen time in half, relying solely on physical fatigue as a strategy.

Matter Neuroscience chose to ignore the standard for lightweight and sleek cases. Instead, they invested in an extreme idea: to produce a case so heavy and bulky that it would make phone use tiring.

The result is a stainless steel model weighing 2.7 kg, which is heavier than a 16-inch MacBook Pro. It comes in two separate pieces, secured to the device with screws.

The Fatigue As Use Control Proposal

Inspired by the Black Diamond phone from the 80s, the case does not fit in pockets and complicates usage with every check on the smartphone. The startup claims this inconvenience serves as a natural reminder for users to reduce screen time.

According to the project released on Kickstarter, the fatigue of the hands and arms creates a cycle of physical feedback that discourages excessive use and also tones the muscles. They highlight that only frequent gym-goers might find an advantage in this.

Removing the heavy case also doesn’t make life easier. To take off the accessory, users need an Allen key to separate the two metal parts. The process is cumbersome and time-consuming enough to dissuade any quick attempts to remove the item.

Price, Versions And Campaign Status

The 2.7 kg case is currently in the crowdfunding phase on Kickstarter. Those wanting to purchase the product need to shell out at least US$ 210. There is also a heavier brass version offered for US$ 500 for those truly willing to endure discomfort in the name of reducing smartphone addiction.

Matter Neuroscience aims to raise US$ 75,000 to enable the project. As of the publication of this material, the campaign had only raised US$ 17,000.
