The truck powered by natural gas belongs to Transportadora Cavalinho and will be used to transport phenol produced by the company Rhodia

As part of a pilot project to develop the use of a new energy matrix, Transportadora Cavalinho, in partnership with Scania, provided a truck powered by natural gas to transport phenol produced in Paulínia, in the state of São Paulo, by Rhodia, a company from the Solvay Group, to the SI Group Crios Resinas, whose facilities are in Rio Claro, also in the state of São Paulo. Project to replace diesel with natural gas

In the first phase of the pilot project, the companies will evaluate the performance and behavior of the truck that uses an alternative source of fuel (natural gas) on this route in São Paulo. The expectation is that the use of cleaner energy will allow a monthly reduction of 90% in CO2 emissions and vehicles will become quieter in activity.

Monthly, the total traveled on the route between the Rhodia and SI Group Crios Resinas factories is approximately 6 kilometers. Calculations by Transportadora Cavalinho indicate that diesel truck emissions reach 5.64 ton/CO2, while natural gas trucks are only 0.56 ton/CO2.

Paulo Ossani, director of the Cavalinho transport company, emphasizes that the adoption of new fuel alternatives, such as the use of natural gas in trucks, in cargo transport is a natural movement in the sector. Paulo says that companies in the cargo sector have sought to increase sustainability in their operations, through initiatives to reduce, offset and/or neutralize carbon emissions. We will increasingly see the use of various alternative fuel sources in production chains, adds the director.

The truck used in the carrier project

The Scania truck used in this project has a mechanical horse powered by vehicular natural gas with EURO 6 technology, according to the eighth phase of Proconve – Vehicle Emissions Control Program.

According to Reginaldo Lazari, Rhodia's Supply Chain Manager in Latin America, the pilot project for the truck running on natural gas was approved by the company after a rigorous transport safety evaluation process. Reginaldo says that he has very strict procedures, which the cargo transport market has recognized for many decades, adding that Crios, Rhodia's phenol customer, also gave a favorable opinion on the project to use natural gas in the truck.

Scania has just announced the sale of a fleet of gas trucks to TransMaroni. TransMaroni reaches 50 trucks powered by gas (natural and/or biomethane) from Scania and enters the history of national transport with the largest fleet ever acquired of this alternative solution to diesel. With the deal, Scania reaches the mark of 150 gas trucks sold in Brazil.

The carrier starts a new positioning, which brings sustainability as a priority, concluding an investment cycle in the order of R$ 50 million in several actions in this field and not just related to this purchase. A Scania, which is leading the transition to a more sustainable transport system, reaches the mark of 150 trucks with this technology since the start of sales in October 2019.

TransMaroni acquired the first 11 Scania units in October 2020. With the product's performance and the visibility generated by new business, the company decided to buy other smaller lots, adding another 39 units ordered. In total, the company reached the historic volume of 50 natural gas/methane trucks.
