Elon Musk’s Car, A Tesla Roadster Launched Into Space In 2018 Aboard The Falcon Heavy Rocket, Was Recently Mistaken For An Asteroid By Astronomers. The Vehicle, Which Is Still Drifting Through The Cosmos With The Starman Dummy At The Wheel, Is On An Unpredictable Trajectory And May Remain In Space For Millions Of Years!

If you think Tesla’s electric cars are noisy enough here on Earth, imagine one drifting through space! Indeed, Elon Musk’s car, a cherry-red Tesla Roadster, was launched into the cosmos in 2018 and recently even confused experienced astronomers.

The confusion was so great that an amateur astronomer thought he had discovered a new asteroid, named 2018 CN41. However, in less than 17 hours, experts from the Minor Planet Center came forward to clarify: the supposed asteroid was actually the famous car of Elon Musk. But how did this story begin?

Elon Musk’s Tesla That Turned Into An “Asteroid”

Elon Musk's car may drift through space for millions of years, but no one knows for sure. Over time, radiation and micrometeorites will slowly destroy it until it collides with a planet or is consumed by the Sun.
Elon Musk’s car may drift through space for millions of years, but no one knows for sure. Over time, radiation and micrometeorites will slowly destroy it until it collides with a planet or is consumed by the Sun.

Recently, an observant astronomer detected an unusual object drifting through space. With no previous records, it was quickly identified as a new asteroid and given the technical name 2018 CN41.

The discovery excited the astronomical community. But there was a strange detail: the object seemed to reflect light differently than conventional asteroids. That’s when the big twist came!

The Minor Planet Center, the agency responsible for tracking celestial bodies, analyzed the trajectory of the “asteroid” and realized that it exactly matched the orbit of the Tesla Roadster launched by SpaceX in 2018. The discovery revealed that the car is still drifting in space and occasionally reappears in ground telescopes.

How Elon Musk’s Car Got Into Space?

The Tesla Roadster was launched into space on the first flight of the Falcon Heavy, SpaceX’s giant rocket, on February 6, 2018. The goal was to test the rocket’s capacity to carry payloads into deep space.

Instead of using concrete weights, as is common in rocket tests, Elon Musk decided to innovate. He wanted something more “fun” and, of course, that would serve as marketing for Tesla. The result? A sports car drifting through space, immortalized as one of the boldest marketing stunts in history.

To complete the spectacle, Musk placed a mannequin named Starman in the driver’s seat, dressed in a SpaceX spacesuit. With David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” playing on the radio (albeit without sound in the vacuum), the car was launched towards an elliptical orbit around the Sun.

What Happened To The Tesla Roadster Since 2018?

Since the launch, the Tesla has been orbiting the Sun in a path similar to that of Mars. From time to time, it approaches Earth, which explains why it was detected again.

But is the car still intact? Probably not. Solar radiation and the impact of micrometeorites must have worn away the paint and materials of the car. The leather seats and tires have likely disintegrated, leaving only the metal chassis drifting in space.

The Impact Of This Story On Astronomy

The episode raises questions about the increase of space debris. Today, in addition to decommissioned satellites and rocket fragments, we now even have a car in space.

The confusion with the “asteroid” Tesla highlights the challenge that scientists face in tracking potentially hazardous objects for Earth. If a car can be mistaken for an asteroid, imagine the risks of misidentification in the future.

Matthew Payne, director of the Minor Planet Center, stated that the detection of unknown objects is increasing, which may hinder the protection against real asteroids.

The Tesla Roadster: A Icon Of Space Pop Culture

More than a space experiment, the Tesla Roadster has become a cultural icon. Musk’s boldness showed how space can be explored not only for science but also for entertainment and advertising.

If Sputnik was the first artificial satellite and Apollo 11 took humans to the Moon, the Tesla Roadster entered history as the first car sent into space, changing the way we view space missions.
