German Students Develop New Electric Car Prototype With More Than 2 Thousand Km Of Range That Could Easily Travel From São Paulo To Rio De Janeiro Three Times On A Single Charge.

A group of students from Technical University of Munich (TUM), in Germany, achieved a new world record for the world’s highest range electric car, the single-seater prototype “muc022”. This electric car covered 2,575.79 kilometers before completely draining its battery.

New Electric Car With More Than 2 Thousand Km Of Range Could Go From São Paulo To Rio De Janeiro Three Times

With this range, starting from São Paulo, the electric car could travel back and forth to Rio de Janeiro three times on a single charge. Featuring a two-door coupe shape, the vehicle that promises to revolutionize the electric car market has a very fluid aerodynamic profile and some features that allow the electric car to drive 2,574 km without any external recharging.

Equipped with a small 15.5 kWh battery, smaller than that of some plug-in hybrid models, it set an impressive record on the runway at Munich Airport.

Weighing about 170 kg and delivering a limited speed of 42 km/h, this high-range electric car features a drag coefficient of 0.159 cx and two electric motors of 440 W, developed with permanent magnets and a gallium nitride inverter.

The previous record was 1,609 km without recharging; however, the muc22 went far beyond that, achieving a consumption of 0.6 kWh/100 km or 116 km per kWh.

In the case of the new electric car, the TUM team developed a closed track in a hangar, and the vehicle ran for six consecutive days, involving various drivers and a pace constantly monitored by auditors to verify the measurements.

Details Of The Tests Of The Electric Car With More Than 2 Thousand Km Of Range

In four days of testing, the German students managed to surpass the previous record of 1,608.54 km; however, the vehicle still had battery charge left. Thus, they drove for another two days until the battery capacity was fully drained.

In the end, the new electric car became one of the most efficient models in the world, surpassing models like the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX. During the IAA Mobility in Munich, the model, which promises to revolutionize the electric car market, received the award for “Longest Distance in Electric Vehicle, Single Charge (Non-Solar)” from a representative of the Guinness World Records.

Currently, production-series electric cars with the highest range easily exceed 700 km, with some models, such as the Lucid Air, approaching 1,000 km. A decade ago, vehicle manufacturers thought that electric models could only go up to 160 km, meeting people’s demands; however, today there is an ambition to achieve range averages similar to those of combustion vehicles.

Even though the charging infrastructure is advancing in the U.S. and Europe, manufacturers currently consider between 400 and 500 km to be a good average range.

New Batteries Could Offer Double The Range

Toyota has fully entered the electric vehicle sector and, after announcing a new production unit exclusively for electric cars in 2026, the automaker also revealed that it is working on four new next-generation batteries. Some reduce the cost of the vehicle by up to 40% and can deliver a range of 1,200 km.

According to data from Inside EVs, Toyota will have four types of batteries. Three of them will feature new liquid electrolyte technologies, and one will use solid-state battery technology. According to Toyota, the new battery will meet the demand for 1.7 million electric cars.
