Analysis From Auto Papo Reveals That Ethanol Stands Out While Diesel With Biodiesel Requires Attention; Understand The Deadlines And Risks For Your Engine.

Leaving the car parked for too long can raise a crucial question: which fuel has the longest shelf life in the tank? The answer, according to an analysis from Auto Papo, may surprise many drivers and points to ethanol as the durability champion. The choice of fuel directly impacts engine health and can avoid mechanical issues and losses resulting from natural degradation.

The deterioration of fuels is a chemical process that affects their properties, which can lead to the formation of sludge, loss of efficiency, and even serious damage to the injection system. While gasoline and, especially, diesel have shorter shelf lives, ethanol proves to be more stable. However, each has particularities that every driver needs to know to avoid being caught off guard when starting the engine.

The Diesel And The Accelerated Risk Of Biodiesel

Currently, the fuel that requires the most attention from drivers is diesel, especially due to the mandatory addition of biodiesel to its composition. As detailed by Auto Papo, biodiesel has an organic origin (vegetable oils), which makes it a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria, in turn, transform diesel into a more hygroscopic compound, meaning it has a greater ability to absorb moisture from the air.

This absorption of water is extremely harmful, as it accelerates degradation and leads to the formation of a thick sludge at the bottom of the tank. This sludge can clog filters, damage the high-pressure pump, and the injectors, which are expensive components to repair. The recommendation from Auto Papo is clear: if you use your diesel vehicle infrequently, like an SUV or pickup truck, fill up only what is necessary to drive in the coming days. Never leave diesel parked in the tank for more than a week or 10 days.

Gasoline: Deadlines And The Advantage Of The Premium Version

Gasoline, the Most Common Fuel In The Brazilian Fleet, Has An Intermediate Durability But Also Requires Care. In general, regular or additive gasoline has a shelf life that varies from 3 to 4 months, potentially reaching a maximum of 5 to 6 months under ideal conditions, before it starts to lose its main characteristics. The oxidation process and the evaporation of the more volatile components reduce its octane rating, which causes a loss of performance and can lead to the infamous “piston knocking”.

However, there is a notable difference when we talk about premium gasolines (such as Petrobras Podium, Shell V-Power Racing, or Ipiranga Octapro). According to the analysis from Auto Papo, these versions can last a bit longer, exceeding 6 months of validity. This is due to their more robust chemical composition and a superior package of additives, which include more effective antioxidants, helping to preserve the properties of the fuel for an extended period.

Ethanol: The Unexpected Champion Of Durability

To the surprise of many, ethanol is the fuel with the greatest durability in the car’s tank, easily surpassing both diesel and gasoline. Auto Papo reports that, in the vehicle’s tank, alcohol can maintain its properties intact for a period ranging from 6 months to up to 1 year. Under perfect storage conditions, such as in stainless steel tanks, its shelf life can reach an impressive 2 years.

The greater chemical stability of ethanol makes it less susceptible to oxidation and degradation compared to fossil fuels. However, the portal issues an important warning: the long shelf life of ethanol is not a free pass to leave the car in the garage. Problems such as tire deformation (flat spot), oxidation of cooling system components, and battery discharge are real risks for vehicles that remain parked for months, regardless of the shelf life of the fuel.
