Wärtsilä Was Hired by CBO to Convert the Vessel CBO Flamengo. It Will Be the First Ship with Hybrid Propulsion, Alternating Between Diesel and Batteries
The Brazilian offshore support vessel operator CBO hired the Finnish marine equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä to modify one of its vessels. According to Wärtsilä, the CBO Flamengo will be the first ship equipped with hybrid propulsion batteries in Brazil and Latin America, alternating its power supply between diesel and batteries. This is expected to improve the energy consumption of the ships and reduce their carbon footprint.

The delivery deadline for Wärtsilä’s equipment is set for April 2021, and the installation and integration of the equipment will be carried out by CBO. The scope of the contract includes conversion, services, delivery of the hybrid solution, and commissioning.
Wärtsilä stated that “the hybrid system will provide redundancy power and reduce intermittent load spikes, saving fuel and lowering exhaust emission levels. Additionally, as the engines will operate for fewer hours, maintenance requirements and costs will be reduced.”
