Understand How Simple Practices Can Prevent Serious Accidents with the Improper Use of Cell Phone Chargers

The Fire Department of Paraná (CBMPR) issued an important alert after a recent accident in Curitiba.
During the incident, a cell phone exploded inside a moving car, causing a traffic accident.
Furthermore, according to the firefighters, the incorrect use of chargers and low-quality cables represents a real risk of short circuits, fires, and explosions, and therefore requires more attention from consumers.

Risks of Using Non-Certified Cables

Captain Luisiana Guimarães Cavalca from CBMPR explains that many consumers choose cheap cables and, as a result, end up putting their safety at risk.
These products often lack certification from Anatel and, consequently, cannot withstand the heat generated during charging.
As a result, overheating, short circuits, and even explosions can occur.
Additionally, the officer emphasizes that it is essential to choose certified and high-quality equipment, as it significantly reduces the risk of domestic and automotive accidents.
Therefore, it is crucial to check the origin and safety marking of the product before using it.

Essential Care During Charging

One should never leave the cell phone charging unattended, especially when leaving home, as this attitude increases the chances of fire.
In various occurrences recorded by firefighters, homes caught fire and the cell phone was identified as the probable cause of the incident.
Another common mistake is charging the phone on the bed, sofa, or under the pillow, as these materials burn quickly and spread fire easily.
Therefore, it is ideal to place the device on a firm, ventilated surface away from flammable materials, thereby avoiding any possibility of fire.
Additionally, those with children or pets should unplug the charger from the outlet after use, as biting the cable can cause electrical shocks.
Thus, supervising the charging is always the best way to prevent accidents and protect the family.

Risks of Charging in Vehicles

According to the CBMPR, charging cell phones inside vehicles requires heightened attention and constant care.
Captain Cavalca advises to start the car before connecting the device, as the voltage variation when starting can damage the phone and even cause an explosion.
Thus, it is essential to follow this simple recommendation, which can prevent serious accidents.
The case in Curitiba, recorded in 2024, reinforces the importance of following safe practices during the use of electronics in vehicles, especially on long trips.
Therefore, it is always better to prevent than to remedy.

Tips to Prevent Accidents

Use cables and chargers approved by Anatel and, therefore, always check for certification on the packaging before purchase.
Avoid leaving the cell phone charging unattended and, thus, unplug the charger before leaving home.
Never charge the phone on beds, sofas, or pillows, as these materials are highly flammable and increase the risk of fire.
Disconnect the charger from the outlet after use, thereby reducing the risk of shocks, especially in homes with small children.
Monitor the battery temperature and, if the device gets too hot or shows deformities, stop using it immediately and seek authorized technical assistance.
In the car, connect the phone only after starting the vehicle, thereby avoiding sudden voltage variations and damage to the device.
