Betting On Market Diversification And Trying To Recover Since 2019, The Shipyards Aim To Generate Various Job Opportunities To Complement Their Offshore Wind Energy Generation Project

According to the Agência Brasil website, offshore wind power plant construction projects for electricity generation are seen by the shipbuilding industry as an opportunity for shipyards to diversify their client portfolio and generate more jobs.

This topic was one of the highlights of the Naval Panorama in Rio de Janeiro 2022, a document released on Wednesday, 16, by the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Firjan).

The shipyard sector has been experiencing a recovery since 2019, according to Firjan, with the generation of 6,000 job opportunities. Although the balance is positive, the current employment level still represents only a quarter of what it was in 2014.

New Wind Energy Generation Projects Could Boost The Naval Sector

Projects with applications for environmental licensing for offshore wind farms are emerging on the horizon as a possibility to heat up the sector, which already has experience in offshore projects from the oil and gas industry, one of its main clients.

The document published by Firjan includes an article from the National Union of the Shipbuilding and Repair Industry (Sinaval), estimating that, within a five-year horizon, wind farms will become an active sector with demand for shipyards, which could even integrate the structures with what already exists in the ocean for oil exploration.

“Floating platforms from the oil and gas industry can be adapted without major complexities, leveraging their structures and securing them to the seabed, thus achieving excellent stability for the turbine installed on the topside of the platform. Additionally, the structures can be assembled on land and then towed to the open sea, making the operation more efficient and safe”, highlighted the shipyard union.

Other Energy Projects

The manager of Oil, Gas and Naval at Firjan, Karine Fragoso, says that areas already granted for oil and gas exploration could also host offshore wind energy generation projects.

“These offshore wind projects could bring Brazilian shipyards construction opportunities, whether for parts and pieces or for a larger structure”, she stated.

“It’s necessary to better understand how the productive chain of this type of market unfolds, what we already have installed here in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil that can support this type of construction, and what we need to attract.”
