Corolla Cross Sales Drop 14% and Raise Alarm! Toyota Faces Identity Crisis in Europe While Shining in Brazil
Not all success is global, and the Corolla Cross is living proof of that. While the SUV from Toyota easily leads sales in Brazil, in Europe it is far from repeating the same performance. The reason? According to the brand’s marketing chief there, the car’s design fails to excite anyone. Yes, the automaker itself acknowledges that the current model is “bland” by European standards. It has already promised radical changes for the next generation.
Toyota Admits: Corolla Cross Design Does Not Convince Europeans
In an interview with Automotive News, Andrea Carlucci, marketing director of Toyota in Europe, got straight to the point: the Corolla Cross has a design that is too generic to please consumers on the continent. “We don’t have a Corolla Cross suitable for Europe, as it is a product made to be global,” he stated. According to him, the lack of European identity hampers sales, which continue to decline month after month.
“If we bring more European flair, sales will increase,” added Carlucci, hinting that the model is set for a complete overhaul, at least in the Old Continent. And it’s not just an assumption; the numbers confirm the problem.

Corolla Cross Sales Drop 14% and Raise Alarm
In the first four months of 2025, the Corolla Cross registered only 11,259 units sold in Europe. This represents a 14% drop compared to the same period the previous year, according to data released by the brand itself.
Meanwhile, its bolder sibling, the Toyota C-HR, with a sportier design and striking lines, sold no fewer than 41,950 units in the same period, a growth of 9.6% compared to 2024. The data is public and can be directly checked in Toyota’s European sales report.
This glaring difference between the two SUVs shows that the European consumer wants striking, bold designs with personality. Not something made to please the entire world, like the current Corolla Cross.
GR Sport Version Tried to Save the Look
Knowing that the “standard” design was not pleasing, Toyota even tried to give it a makeover. The 2025 line of the Corolla Cross gained a sportier version in Europe, the GR Sport, with redesigned bumpers, more aggressive front grille, and bucket-style seats with red details in the interior.
Even so, the impact was limited. The automaker understood that mere touch-ups do not solve the issue. The audience wants something genuinely new, not a facelift that looks like an improvisation.
Next Generation Will Bring Exclusive Designs for Each Region
The good news is that Toyota is already planning a deeper change. The next generation of the Corolla Cross, set to debut in 2027, will come with regional designs. That is, each part of the world will receive a model with its own look. For Europe, the promise is for a bolder SUV with very different features from what we see today. Meanwhile, more traditional markets, such as Asia and Latin America, are expected to maintain a more conservative approach.
“The key point is that Toyota designed the TNGA platform to allow each region to develop its own body design,” explained Carlucci. This means the car’s base will remain the same, but the exterior look could change significantly from one place to another, allowing for local boldness without compromising the overall project structure.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, the Corolla Cross Reigns Supreme
If over there the model struggles to find its audience, here the scenario is quite different. In Brazil, the Corolla Cross has become a synonym for success among mid-size SUVs. Just between January and May 2025, the car sold 24,755 units, even outperforming the traditional Jeep Compass, which recorded 22,986 units in the same period.
The data comes from Fenabrave, the federation that represents vehicle dealerships in the country. And it helps explain why the model remains strong in the national market, even with a more subdued design. Here, the audience seems to value reliability, interior space, and brand tradition more than an ultra-bold design.
Additionally, versions like the XRX Hybrid stand out for efficiency in consumption and the advanced safety package, something that attracts both fleet owners and urban families looking for savings without sacrificing comfort.
Toyota Already Understands That It Can’t Push the Same Car Worldwide
Toyota already understands that it can’t push the same car worldwide and expect similar results. With the new generation of the Corolla Cross scheduled for 2027, the expectation is that the SUV will finally find its place in the European market as well — with renewed design and its own identity.
In Brazil, the trend is for the model to remain strong, with possible lighter updates, as the current design continues to please local consumers.
