Information That Danish Giant Will Install a Container Terminal at the Port of Pernambuco Is Creating Great Expectations for Better Jobs Among Workers

There are high expectations for the arrival of the world’s largest maritime logistics company at the Port of Suape, located in the municipality of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, on the southern coast of Pernambuco. APM Terminals – Maersk acquired, in July last year, an area of the Atlântico Sul shipyard and is now set to build a terminal to handle 400,000 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), which will modernize and increase the operational potential of the port complex by 55% and create new jobs. This news has been one of the main topics among workers in what is the main port complex in the Northeast.

An anonymous source within the Port of Suape revealed to the report from the portal Click Petróleo e Gás that there is expected to be a large migration of workers from Tecon to Maersk. The Filipino-owned company has been operating there since 2001 under a concession. Reports indicate that with each new announcement regarding the arrival of the Danish giant, there is a significant flow of news sharing on cell phones and among conversational circles.

According to our source, several workers are creating profiles on LinkedIn – a professional and business identity social network – under the information that job vacancies for the new positions will be announced there. Additionally, there are reports that APM Terminals – Maersk workers stationed at the Port of Pecém, on the coast of Ceará, received a 14th salary in dollars in 2022, which could also happen in Pernambuco.

Construction of the new Maersk terminal at the Port of Suape may begin as early as 2023. Up to R$ 2.6 billion will be invested. The company’s expectation is to start operations in 2026. During the construction of the new container terminal, more than 3,000 jobs are expected to be generated. During operations, it is estimated that there will be 400 job positions. Regarding ending Tecon’s monopoly, the Danish company states that “competition can add value to customers and attract new cargo flows, helping the port of Suape to grow faster and generating more business for the State of Pernambuco”.

Planning Has Already Begun…

The Port of Suape confirmed in 2022 several important projects for the future. Some of these successful initiatives favor the arrival of Maersk at the site. In November, the Port concluded an agreement for the Dutch company Royal Van Oord to complete the dredging of the main port channel for a depth of 20 meters along its entire length. With these works, the port terminal becomes more attractive to the international market, able to accommodate larger ships.

In the same month, Maersk announced that it will expand its operations in land transportation after the purchase of 222 new trailers and 113 “mechanical horses” (EURO 5 Meteor and Constellation), which is the largest batch of this model ever delivered by Volkswagen.

These new trucks are intended for road freight transport over medium and long distances. Thus, the company will expand its business involving the food and beverage sector, electronics, household goods, and even personal use items.

This is a strategy that strengthens its routes from São Paulo to the Amazon and expands its operations in Bahia, Santa Catarina, and Pernambuco, places where the company has made significant legal battles for new business, including the purchase of the area located at the Atlântico Sul shipyard in Suape.

Suape: Other Successful Projects in 2022

Suape also announced the arrival of a mineral terminal from Bemisa. The project is expected to cost R$ 1.5 billion with an estimate to handle 13.5 million tons of iron ore per year, with the potential to store 780,000 tons of the product in the yard.

The latest successful announcement was the confirmation of the implementation of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. The Government of Pernambuco chose the Brazilian holding company OnCorp for the construction of the liquefied natural gas gasification terminal.

Recently, the Port of Suape regained its autonomy. Thus, the operations of docks and piers, as well as leasing contracts and the establishment of tariffs, are under the authority of the Port Authority. This allows the Port to conduct studies, draft notices, carry out bidding procedures, and celebrate contracts related to port leases with greater agility and less bureaucracy. This condition had been lost in 2013 when the so-called Ports Law (Law 14.047/20) came into effect.
