China Introduced to the World an Unbreakable Wind Turbine, But the Equipment Faced Unexpected Failures

Recently, China surprised the world by presenting a revolutionary offshore wind turbine, considered the most powerful in the world, equipped with advanced engineering and cutting-edge materials.

Promising to transform the renewable energy sector, the equipment was designed to withstand extreme conditions and operate continuously for decades.

However, despite all the promises of durability, the turbine faced unexpected failures.

This is the offshore wind turbine MySE18.X-20MW, manufactured by the Chinese giant Mingyang and considered to have the highest single capacity in the world.

The equipment suffered breakages in its giant blades.

The incident occurred in early December, a few months after the prototype was installed in Hainan, China, on August 28.

A High-Capacity Prototype

Designed to operate at medium to high wind speeds, the MySE18.X-20MW has been praised for its resistance to typhoons and winds of up to 79.8 m/s.

With a rotor diameter between 260 and 292 meters, the turbine has flexible power of up to 20 MW.

In ideal conditions, it can generate 80 million kWh annually, enough to offset 66,000 tons of CO₂ emissions — equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 96,000 people.

However, the initial performance was compromised by the breaking of the blades while the turbine was still in operation.

Reports indicate that pieces of the blades fell, but the cause of the incident has not yet been clarified. The manufacturer Mingyang did not immediately comment on the case.

History of Resistance

Despite the recent problem, the turbine had successfully withstood Super Typhoon Yagi, which passed through Asia in September.

During the event, a nearby wind farm in Hainan was devastated, but the MySE18.X-20MW prototype remained functional, demonstrating its robustness in the face of extreme weather conditions.

Innovation and Expansion of Mingyang

Mingyang previously announced the MySE 22MW, an even more powerful turbine, during the China Wind Power exhibition in Beijing.

This model will have a rotor with a diameter of over 310 meters and blades made of carbon fiber, allowing for the production of 80 GWh of energy annually.

Mingyang’s strategy focuses on developing larger turbines that reduce operational costs for wind energy developers by minimizing the need for multiple installations to achieve high capacities.

Importance of Wind Turbines in the Energy Transition

Wind turbines play a fundamental role in generating clean energy, especially at a time when the transition to renewable sources is becoming urgent.

Mingyang has stood out as a leader in the sector, offering innovative and tailored solutions for various wind conditions, including typhoon-prone areas.

With robust investments in research and development, the company continues to leverage its expertise to produce high-performance equipment, strengthening the global renewable energy infrastructure.

Although the incident with the blades raised concerns, the MySE18.X-20MW prototype represents a significant advancement in the wind energy sector.

The pursuit of improvements and design adjustments should ensure that the technology continues to evolve, solidifying Mingyang’s position in the offshore turbine market.
