To tackle this challenge, scientists funded by China’s Key Technology R&D Program, linked to the Ministry of Science and Technology, developed a biodegradable detergent.
It is made with cellulose nanofibers from wood and corn zein protein. According to the researchers, the new product is as effective as traditional commercial detergents.
Natural Ingredients With Efficient Performance
Eco-friendly cleaning products often face difficulties. They can be hard to rinse, expensive, and even damage fabrics or surfaces.
But the new biodegradable detergent developed by the team led by Pengtao Liu has proven to be different. It is made with abundant and renewable ingredients and did not show these limitations.
The cellulose in the formula attracts and repels water. This helps in emulsion formation and the removal of various stains. Meanwhile, corn zein protein helps stabilize the mixture and keep oils trapped in the emulsion.
The tests were conducted on cotton fabrics and dishes dirty with paint, chili oil, and tomato paste. For comparison, the researchers used commercial powder detergent and dish soap solutions, diluted in deionized water.
Superior Results At Higher Concentrations
On cotton, the plant-based detergent was slightly less effective than the powder detergent when both were diluted to 1%. However, when the concentration of the plant-based product was increased to 5%, it removed stains more efficiently than the powder detergent diluted to 1%.
Microscope analysis showed that the cellulose and zein detergent left no residue on the fabrics after use. This indicates that it is gentle on the material, which could be an important advantage for delicate clothing.
In the tests with dishes, the results were also positive. The scientists used ceramic, glass, stainless steel, and plastic plates. The natural detergent, in its most concentrated version, managed to clean almost as well as regular dish soap. And in some cases, such as stainless steel plates, it was even more effective.
For example, a solution with 5% of the plant-based detergent removed 92% of the stains on those dishes. Meanwhile, the dish soap, with a 1% concentration, removed 87%. The researchers highlight this data as a sign that the new product can compete with the synthetic agents currently used.
Biodegradable Detergent: Sustainable Alternative Gains Space
The search for sustainable solutions has gained momentum. The public is more aware of the environmental impact of common everyday items. Ingredients like phosphates and alkylphenols, found in many cleaning products, are concerns. Therefore, interest is growing in more natural alternatives.
According to the researchers, this new plant-based detergent emerges as part of this change. It can offer an efficient, economical solution with a lower environmental impact. At the same time, it meets basic cleaning needs for clothes and household utensils.
