Joinville attracts more than 4 thousand new residents per year with its combination of safety, affordable cost of living, and quality of life. Discover why this Brazilian city has become a destination for those seeking well-being and opportunities.

According to the 2022 Census by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Joinville registered a population of 616,323 inhabitants, representing a growth of 19.61% compared to the 2010 Census, when the city had 515,288 inhabitants. This corresponds to an increase of 101,035 people over 12 years, resulting in an average of approximately 8,420 new residents annually.

In addition, demographic analyses indicate that, considering births and deaths during this period, the natural growth of the population was about 60 thousand people. Therefore, the migratory balance — that is, the number of people who moved to Joinville — was approximately 43 thousand individuals between 2010 and 2022, which represents an average of around 3,583 people per year.

Joinville brings together rare factors in one place: first-world urban infrastructure, public safety above the national average, job opportunities, and quality education. These characteristics have made the municipality one of the favorites for families looking to leave large metropolises like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Curitiba in search of tranquility without giving up comfort.

What makes Joinville a Brazilian city destination for those seeking quality of life is the combination of elements that, together, transform the experience of living there. With just over 620 thousand inhabitants in 2025, the city is among the largest in Southern Brazil, but maintains a rural lifestyle in several aspects.

The cost of living in Joinville is considered one of the most affordable among the major urban centers in the country. Housing prices, food, and transportation are lower than in cities like Florianópolis and Porto Alegre, which attracts young professionals, retirees, and even foreigners.

Another differentiator is the quality of the healthcare system. Joinville has nationally recognized hospitals, such as Hospital Dona Helena, in addition to a well-structured and efficient public network. The city is also a reference in technological innovation and houses industrial and software hubs that provide qualified job opportunities.

Pleasant Climate and Safety Boost Joinville’s Population Growth

Joinville is known for its subtropical climate, with mild summers and cool winters. The city also boasts one of the best public safety indices in Brazil among municipalities with over 500 thousand inhabitants. According to state rankings, Joinville ranks among the safest capitals in the Southern Region, with low urban violence rates.

These factors are crucial for families with children and the elderly, who seek a calm, safe environment with adequate infrastructure for all stages of life. The expanding bike path network, green areas, and sustainable mobility incentive programs complete the package of advantages for those who choose Joinville as their new home.

Culture, Nature, and Leisure: The Lifestyle of Those Who Live in Joinville

Despite its industrial profile, Joinville is a city that breathes culture. Known as the City of Dance, it hosts the prestigious Joinville Dance Festival, one of the largest events of its kind in the world. The presence of the Bolshoi Theatre School in Brazil also reinforces its artistic vocation.

Those seeking nature and tranquility will find various outdoor leisure options in the municipality. The Joinville Lookout, the Zoobotanical Park, the Expoville Park, and the Pedra Branca Walkway are just a few of the places where one can relax and practice sports in contact with nature.

The city also invests in community spaces and modern urbanism, such as the Rio Cachoeira Axis, which is undergoing revitalization and promises to become one of the region’s postcards.

Education and Innovation Make Joinville a Center of Attraction for Families and Companies

Joinville houses some of the best educational institutions in the southern region, such as the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC) and the campus of the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFC), as well as excellent private schools. Technical and vocational education is also well developed, focusing on areas such as technology, mechatronics, and engineering.

Another attraction is the innovation ecosystem, which has developed around technological parks and startup incubators. The city is home to major technology and innovation companies, such as Tupy and Embraco (part of the Nidec group), which attracts highly qualified professionals from other regions of the country.

Joinville Stands Out in Quality of Life Rankings

Joinville has been considered one of the best cities in Brazil to live in by rankings such as the Urban Development Index for Longevity, developed by the Mongeral Aegon Longevity Institute in partnership with FGV. The study evaluates indicators such as mobility, education, culture, health, and job market.

In 2024, the city also stood out in international analyses, ranking among Latin American municipalities with the greatest balance between economic development and social well-being. The recognition strengthens Joinville’s image as a quality of life hub, attracting not only Brazilians but also foreigners, especially Germans and Swiss, who have historically had ties to the region.

How to Plan to Live in Joinville

Those considering moving to Joinville will find good opportunities in the real estate sector. The local market offers everything from affordable apartments to high-end homes in neighborhoods such as América, Saguaçu, and Glória. The city is well connected to other capitals in the South, with quick access to BR-101 and Joinville-Lauro Carneiro de Loyola Airport, with direct flights to São Paulo and other capitals.

However, it is important to consider that the growing demand for housing and services is causing rapid urban expansion. Therefore, planning the move should include research on neighborhoods, transportation, schools, and job opportunities — in addition to on-site visits to experience the city’s lifestyle.

Joinville Establishes Itself as the Ideal Brazilian City for Those Seeking Quality of Life

With safety, an affordable cost of living, cultural options, and excellent infrastructure, Joinville has ceased to be merely an industrial reference to become one of the primary destinations for those seeking quality of life in Brazil. The city is growing without losing its rural charm, offering a balance between modernity and tranquility.

More than 4 thousand people choose Joinville every year as their new home, and the reasons are clear: here it is possible to live well, with safety, contact with nature, access to good services, and growth opportunities. Joinville is undoubtedly a Brazilian city that lives up to its reputation as a place worth living.
