Although the cup has been referred to as “Holy Grail” in various reports, experts warn that this designation may be misleading.
“One of the discoveries that caught headlines was nicknamed ‘Holy Grail’ in many reports, suggesting that the vessel is similar to the fictional cup from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, also discovered in Khazneh,” said archaeologist Claire Isabella Gilmour from the University of Bristol.
Archaeology explains that, unlike the magical cup from the movie, the vessel found is a common jar, typical of Nabataean pottery. “In reality, it’s a humble jar, not a cup that gives whoever drinks from it eternal life,” Gilmour stated.
The resemblance between the found cup and that represented in the film is not coincidental. The production company Lucasfilm, which created the movie’s set, conducted detailed research on Nabataean pottery to develop the props. “The similarities between the vessels are not a case of art imitating life, but the result of meticulous research,” Gilmour emphasized.
Nabataean pottery, as explained by Gilmour, is known for its fineness and lightness, generally used for ceremonial purposes. This characteristic contrasts with Roman ceramics, which were thicker and sturdier, making them easier to transport.
The discoveries of pottery in Petra are not only interesting but reflect the city’s importance as a trade center.
The Tombs Of Al Khazneh
During the excavations, archaeologists also uncovered two previously unknown tombs, leading to more in-depth studies.
Using ground-penetrating radar, researchers indicated that there could be more tombs beneath Al Khazneh. The discovery of the 12 graves, carved into the rock, uncovered a series of varied funerary objects, including items made of pottery, bronze, and iron.
Josh Gates, host of the show “Expedition Unknown,” highlighted the significance of the finding: “This may be the most significant tomb ever found in Petra and a discovery of historical proportions.” However, critics pointed out that media coverage might have overstated the relevance of the cup.
Unknown Identities
Despite the excitement surrounding the cup and the bodies found, the identity of the individuals buried remains a mystery. Gilmour highlights that, although the position of the bodies and the sarcophagi suggest a high social status, little is known about the life and traditions of the Nabataeans. “We still know nothing about the identities of the buried,” she said.
It is important to note that the bodies were in a remarkable state of preservation, which is rare in a site with such a rich history of excavations and looting. This preservation may provide new insights into Nabataean culture and funerary rituals.
The excavations at Petra not only revealed a valuable piece of history but also emphasized the importance of ongoing studies of ancient civilizations. The lack of written documentation by the Nabataeans makes each discovery a crucial step toward understanding their society better.
Gilmour states that the analysis of the new findings is just beginning. “One of the lasting mysteries is the true purpose of the Khazneh. These burials may help answer this question and, at the same time, revise our understanding of this ancient and cosmopolitan city,” she concluded.
