The E (single-seat) and F (two-seat) version that Colombia is purchasing comes with the Raven ES-05 AESA radar, IRST sensors, integration with smart weapons, sustained supersonic flight, and extended range. Why Did Colombia Choose the Gripen?
The choice of Swedish Saab Gripen E/F fighters was not a last-minute impulse. Since 2022, the Colombian government had been analyzing proposals from various manufacturers — among them, the Lockheed Martin F-16 (USA) and the Dassault Rafale (France). The difference with the Gripen? Cost-effectiveness, accessible technology, and customization capability for South American needs.
The diplomatic break with Israel in 2024 made it unsustainable to keep the Kfirs operating without technical support. The decision to make the switch became inevitable.
What Else Comes in the Package?
Yes, the Gripen fighters are the highlight, but the deal goes far beyond the runways. Saab has struck agreements with the Colombian government for social compensation, including the establishment of a solar panel factory in Córdoba, projects for providing clean drinking water in La Guajira, and the modernization of the San Juan de Dios hospital in Bogotá.
It is a military “soft power” move that blends fighters with social impact — an unusual but strategic combination.
How Much Does This Upgrade Cost?
Officially, the figures are still discreet. But projections made in 2023 indicated that the package for 16 Gripen E/F aircraft could reach US$ 3.65 billion, including training, armaments, and logistical support. The final version of the contract will be detailed at F-AIR Colombia 2025, an aerospace fair scheduled for the second half of this year.
