The CMA CGM Saint Germain, with a capacity of 24,000 TEU, is the latest sustainable vessel to join the service between Asia and Europe, strengthening the company’s commitment to emission reduction.
The shipping giant CMA CGM has received its second 24,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ship. The new vessel, built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China, marks another advance for the French company in its sustainable fleet strategy.
Delivery and Details of the CMA CGM Saint Germain
The delivery of the CMA CGM Saint Germain took place at a ceremony on June 6. Measuring 399 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, the ship will be deployed on the FAL service, an important trade route connecting Asia and Europe.
The Impact of the LNG-Powered Container Ship
The new vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine. It can operate on liquefied natural gas, a sustainable fuel. The use of LNG can reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by approximately 23%. With this technology, the ship is expected to operate with minimal environmental impact.

The first commercial hydrogen-powered ferry enters operation in the U.S., eliminates the use of diesel, uses fuel cells to generate clean energy on board, and transforms San Francisco Bay into a landmark of the new era of emission-free navigation.

With a length of 121 meters and four rigid sails of 36 meters that automatically rotate to capture the wind, Canopée is the world’s first hybrid industrial cargo ship powered by wind, used to transport rockets and reduce fuel consumption by up to 30% on transoceanic routes.
Strategic Partnership with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding
This ship is the second in a series. The first, CMA CGM Seine, was delivered in April this year. Both are considered an “updated” version of the world’s first LNG dual-fuel container ship of 23,000 TEU, delivered by the same Hudong-Zhonghua in September 2020. The shipbuilder is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
Other Orders for Container Ships and LNG Ships
The collaboration between CMA CGM and Hudong-Zhonghua is extensive. In April 2021, the companies finalized a $2.3 billion agreement for the construction of six 13,000 TEU LNG-powered ships. Deliveries of this series began in December 2023 with the CMA CGM Bahia. The fifth and sixth ships joined the fleet in July and August 2024, respectively.
The Relationship of CMA CGM with Chinese Shipyards
CMA CGM has consistently turned to Chinese shipbuilders to expand its sustainable fleet, even in the face of geopolitical uncertainties. In March of this year, the shipping company signed a $2.6 billion contract with Jiangnan Shipyard, also part of CSSC, for the construction of twelve 18,000 TEU container ships, all powered by LNG.
