The Largest Urban Mobility Project in the Country Promises to Transform Balneário Camboriú into a Model of Innovation and Sustainability, with Billion-Dollar Investments and 100% Electric Transport Solutions.

Balneário Camboriú, known as the “Brazilian Dubai” due to its imposing skyscrapers and stunning beaches, is about to make a leap into the future of urban mobility. The largest urban mobility project ever planned in Brazil promises to not only change the dynamics of the city but also revolutionize the entire region of the Itajaí River Mouth.

The Promob (Urban Mobility Project) is an ambitious initiative that encompasses 11 municipalities, including Itajaí, Navegantes, Bombinhas, and Camboriú, with an estimated investment of 342 million dollars. At the heart of this project are two main fronts: the implementation of a 100% electric public transport system and the construction of an innovative underwater tunnel between Itajaí and Navegantes.

100% Electric Mobility in the Largest Project of Balneário Camboriú

With 342 million dollars, the LARGEST urban mobility project in Brazil will transform Balneário Camboriú and impact 11 cities!

The public transport system will be a milestone in the history of mobility in Brazil. Called BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), it will feature fully electric buses, exclusive corridors, modern stations, and preferential lanes. The goal is to reduce travel time and carbon emissions, promoting efficient and sustainable transport.

For example, the journey from Bombinhas to Balneário Camboriú, which can currently take up to 2 hours, will be reduced to just 65 minutes. The investment in the BRT system is 108 million dollars, of which 66 million are public funds and 42 million from the private sector.

The Innovative Underwater Tunnel

Another major highlight of the project is the immersed tunnel that will connect Itajaí to Navegantes. This will be the first of its kind in Brazil and will have a depth of 23 meters, shortening the crossing time from up to 60 minutes (by ferry) to an incredible 5 minutes.

With an estimated cost of 188 million dollars, the tunnel will be anchored in the bed of the Itajaí-Açu River, using cutting-edge technology to ensure safety and efficiency.

Economic and Sustainable Impact

In addition to addressing the mobility challenges faced by Balneário Camboriú and its neighboring municipalities, the largest urban mobility project also promises to boost the local economy. It is estimated that 11,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created, along with a significant impact on the quality of life for residents and tourists.

To complement the improvements, the project will include the expansion of green spaces, bike lanes, and shared streets, encouraging the use of bicycles and walking. With this, Balneário Camboriú will establish itself as an example of a sustainable city.

A Model for Brazil and the World

With support from the World Bank and public-private partnerships, Promob will not only meet the demands of the Itajaí River Mouth region but also position itself as a model of innovation for other cities in Brazil. Inspired by successful international projects, such as TransMilenio in Colombia and the submerged tunnel of the Öresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden, the project aims to establish new standards for urban mobility.

Expectations for the Future

Promob is much more than an immediate solution to mobility challenges. It represents a long-term vision for the sustainable development of Balneário Camboriú and the surrounding region. It is expected that by the end of the works, the city will become a global reference in mobility and sustainability.

As we await the start of the works, the expectation is that this will be a turning point for mobility in Brazil, putting Balneário Camboriú on the map as an example to be followed. The largest urban mobility project is on its way, and with it, a new era for the region.
