With Savings of R$800, Drivers from João Pessoa and Campina Grande Choose to Refuel with CNG, as It Is One of the ‘Cheapest’ Fuels at the Moment
Drivers from João Pessoa and Campina Grande are turning to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to fuel their vehicles. With the rise in liquid fuel prices, CNG has created savings of 46% for drivers. In fact, compared to 5 years ago, the savings when refueling with CNG were greater, as drivers paid around R$2.00 per cubic meter of the fuel. However, with the increase in fuel prices at gas stations, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reported that, between October 3 and 9, Brazilian drivers paid around R$ 4.131/m³. Even though the price has doubled, refueling the vehicle with CNG has been the best option for drivers, as gasoline costs around R$ 6.117 and ethanol is sold at R$ 4.77.

CNG Generates Savings, Even with the Rise in Fuel Prices
According to Gabriel Kropsch, director of the National CNG Committee, at the current moment when fuel prices are extremely high, it is more than favorable to refuel with compressed natural gas, as besides the noticeable price difference compared to other fuels, CNG yields much more. For consumers to better understand this savings, it is necessary to calculate the cost per kilometer traveled.
The calculations from the Brazilian Association of Natural Gas Distributors, Abegás, show the following situation: if a car runs about 10.7km per liter and 13.2km per cubic meter, the driver will spend around R$ 0.63 when refueling in Rio de Janeiro with gasoline and R$ 0.31 when refueling the vehicle with gas.

In other words, CNG is 52% cheaper than gasoline. Bringing the example to João Pessoa, if the driver travels 100km per day, they will spend on average R$1,735.00 monthly, whereas if they refuel with CNG, they would only spend R$ 943.00, resulting in a significant savings of R$ 792.00 a month, compared to gasoline. In Campina Grande, drivers would need R$ 1,738.00 to refuel their vehicles with gasoline and R$ 1,056.00 to refuel with CNG for the month. A notable savings of R$ 681.00 per month compared to gasoline.
Cities in Paraíba Save on Fueling
According to Jailson Galvão, president of PBGás, the savings that drivers in Paraíba have been making by switching from liquid fuels to natural gas is quite considerable, especially for drivers who travel a lot.
Galvão further emphasized that just doing the math, the driver will see that by refueling with CNG, they will travel much more and spend significantly less on fuel, achieving savings of nearly R$ 800 per month.
Trucks Will Be Next
According to Marcelo Mendonça, Strategy and Market Director of Abegás, trucks are already being manufactured here in Brazil that can use CNG as fuel. This brings significant benefits to drivers’ wallets, being the best solution to replace diesel. Mendonça also explained that this solution is already widely used in the United States and Europe.
