With an Investment of R$ 1.8 Billion, Factory in Belmonte Will Produce High-Efficiency Solar Panels with Local Raw Material and Unprecedented Technology
Bahia will host the world’s first solar glass factory located outside China. The municipality of Belmonte has been chosen to receive the project, which will have an investment of R$ 1.8 billion. The plant will be built with cutting-edge technology and promises to place the state in a prominent position in the global clean energy market.
The initiative is the result of a partnership between the Bahia Mineral Research Company (CBPM), the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (Secti), the Bahia Gas Company (Bahiagás), the Belmonte City Hall, and the company Homerun Brasil. The agreement was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding.
Technology and Exclusive Raw Material
The plant will be dedicated to producing high-performance photovoltaic panels. The raw material will be high-purity silica, found exclusively in the district of Santa Maria Eterna, in Bahia. This silica will be extracted from an area of CBPM and processed in the municipality itself, using advanced technology.

CBPM’s president, Henrique Carballal, stated that the project represents a historic milestone for the state. According to him, the goal is to transform Bahia’s mineral wealth with innovation and added value.
Homerun Brasil will be responsible for constructing and operating the plant. For the company’s CEO, Antonio Vitor, the quality of the silica sand found in the region is unmatched. According to him, no other place on the planet has silica with the same level of purity.
Production with Greater Efficiency
According to Vitor, the technology used in the transformation of silica into solar glass will allow for the manufacturing of panels with significantly superior performance. “With this technology, solar panels could generate up to twice the energy compared to current ones,” he explained.
Natural gas will be essential in the process, ensuring the stability of the melting furnaces. Bahiagás will be responsible for the continuous supply of the input. According to the company’s president, Luiz Gavazza, the gas is a less polluting fuel and ensures production efficiency.
Qualification and Local Workforce
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation will coordinate partnerships with universities and technical schools. The goal is to train professionals to meet the demands of the new industry. “The people of Bahia, currently students, will already be trained and qualified professionals to work in this endeavor,” said Secretary André Joazeiro.
The Belmonte City Hall will donate the land for the factory installation and will support infrastructure and organization of the local workforce. The expectation is that 70% of unskilled jobs and 30% of skilled jobs will be filled by residents of the city.
Jobs and Economic Transformation
The project will generate 600 direct jobs and 2,800 indirect jobs. For Mayor Iêdo Elias, the venture represents a watershed moment. “It represents the financial emancipation of the municipality of Belmonte,” he stated. The factory will also create a fund focused on education and productive inclusion.
The plant will adopt sustainable measures, such as water reuse and rational use of natural resources. Construction will begin after the date for the groundbreaking is defined. Homerun Brasil has already signed a contract with the construction company responsible for the project. The expectation is to transform Belmonte into an international reference in solar glass production.
