The Government of Espírito Santo Advances With Contract Between ES Gás and Marca Ambiental to Distribute Biogas in the Pipeline Gas Network.
Espírito Santo has taken a decisive step towards a cleaner and more sustainable economy with the signing of a contract to supply biogas to the piped gas network. The agreement, signed between the State Government, the utility ES Gás, and the company Marca Ambiental, marks a significant advancement in the state’s energy policy.
The project is part of the ES Mais+Gás program and anticipates the start of the distribution of the renewable fuel as early as December this year.
By transforming organic waste into gas, the initiative reinforces Espírito Santo’s commitment to decarbonization, technological innovation, and the creation of green jobs.

Biogas: Fuel of the Future Arrives in Espírito Santo
The new contract establishes that biogas, produced from the decomposition of organic waste, will be integrated into the distribution network of ES Gás, the utility responsible for supplying natural gas in the state.
The renewable gas will be generated at the Marca Ambiental plant, which is in the final stages of construction in the municipality of Cariacica, in the Greater Vitória area.
With a private investment of R$ 100 million, the venture will transform waste into a clean energy source, replacing fossil fuels and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
“We are confirming and celebrating this solid partnership between two private companies that have come together to invest R$ 100 million in the construction, here in Espírito Santo, of a biogas plant that will transform waste into fuel gas for industrial use,” declared the acting governor, Ricardo Ferraço.
ES Gás Expands Role in Clean Energy Matrix
ES Gás, the current utility providing piped gas service and part of the Energisa Group since its privatization in 2023, will be responsible for the injection and distribution of the generated biogas.
The company serves more than 84,000 customers in residential, commercial, industrial, automotive, air conditioning, and thermoelectric sectors.
“This contract marks ES Gás’s commitment to drive energy diversification in Espírito Santo, contributing to a stable and increasingly clean energy matrix. The distribution of biogas reinforces the use of renewable sources and low carbon emissions,” stated Fabio Bertollo, the CEO of the utility.
The action is part of the State Plan for GHG Emissions Neutralization, launched in 2024, which sets decarbonization targets for strategic sectors such as energy, industry, transport, and waste.
Espírito Santo: National Reference in Sustainable Energy
The production of biogas by Marca Ambiental reinforces Espírito Santo’s role as a national reference in circular economy and renewable energy.
The fuel will be distributed by ES Gás and can supply industries and other sectors with a low environmental impact and high competitiveness option.
“We are optimistic about this partnership, which enhances the distribution of biogas and enables an innovative project, putting Espírito Santo at the forefront of the sustainable economy,” highlighted Diogo Ribeiro, director of renewable energies at Grupo Marca. He also noted that the reduction of ICMS on biogas increases its competitiveness, facilitating access to the fuel for consumers and businesses.
Modern and Participatory Regulation
The Public Services Regulatory Agency of Espírito Santo (ARSP) has played an essential role in facilitating this advancement.
The regulation for the distribution of biogas was built in a participatory manner, including public consultation with society and the productive sector.
“ARSP is committed to actively contributing to the growth of the biogas market in the state, promoting the expansion of clean, renewable energy that is fundamental for the energy transition,” highlighted Alexandre Ventorim, the agency’s CEO.
The current regulation ensures strict technical criteria for the injection of renewable gas into the network, focusing on quality, safety, and tariff competitiveness, in addition to stimulating innovation and attracting new suppliers.
Positive Economic and Environmental Impacts
In addition to the environmental benefit of replacing fossil fuels with renewable gas, the project also promotes regional economic development.
The construction and operation of the plant create direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local production chain.
The ES Mais+Gás program, responsible for catalyzing these initiatives, aims to achieve 200,000 m³/day of biogas by 2034, consolidating Espírito Santo as a national hub for sustainable energy.
The project is also aligned with international commitments such as the Race to Zero and the Race to Resilience, aimed at neutralizing emissions by 2050 and strengthening global climate resilience.
