The Brazilian Navy recently celebrated a historic milestone with the keel laying ceremony of the first polar ship built on Brazilian territory. The event, which symbolizes the official start of the ship’s construction, took place at the Jurong Aracruz shipyard in Espírito Santo and was attended by the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro. With a budget of approximately 692 million reais, the polar ship Commander Saldanha will be the jewel of the Brazilian polar fleet, designed to replace one of the two ships of the same type currently in operation. The ship is expected to enter service in October 2025.

Ship with Advanced Icebreaker Technology Promises to Boost Research in Antarctica

According to information from the Brazilian Navy, the Commander Saldanha will be equipped with one of the most advanced icebreaker technologies in the world.

This capability will allow the vessel to break through ice layers up to one meter thick, including those formed in less than a year.

Furthermore, the ship will provide more efficient maneuvers, better fuel utilization, and greater agility in loading and unloading equipment during missions in Antarctica.

A significant addition to this vessel is the inclusion of two AirBus-25 helicopters, recently acquired by the Armed Forces.

Each helicopter can transport approximately one and a half tons of cargo and has a flight range of over 600 kilometers.

This will enhance the efficiency of research and logistics operations in Antarctica.

Investment in the Polar Ship Reinforces Commitment to the Brazilian Antarctic Program and Benefits Climate Research

This investment in the construction of the polar ship Commander Saldanha reflects the Brazilian government’s commitment to the Brazilian Antarctic Program (Proantar).

A project that has been ongoing for over four decades and plays a fundamental role in consolidating Brazil’s participation in the Antarctic Treaty as a member with veto power.

Additionally, Proantar enables national scientific research on the frozen continent and provides logistical support for government activities in Antarctica, including the provision of ships, helicopters, doctors, and divers.

According to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), the research conducted in Antarctica has direct implications for predicting extreme weather events in Brazil.

The coordinator for Sea and Antarctica at MCTI, Andrea Cruz-Kaled, highlights the importance of this research.

“Brazilian research proves that phenomena in Antarctica influence rainfall in the Amazon, and that ocean currents in Antarctica directly impact the resources on our coastline.”

Scientific Discoveries in Antarctica and Medicinal Potential

Moreover, studies conducted in Antarctica have revealed substances with potential use in medicine and agriculture.

Andrea Cruz-Kaled mentions that Antarctica hosts a diverse biological community with unique evolutionary adaptations.

Molecules found in fungi and plants in the region may be used in applications such as natural pesticides and sunscreens, representing significant advancements in scientific research.

The investment in the construction of the polar ship Commander Saldanha not only strengthens Brazil’s research capacity in Antarctica but also reinforces the country’s commitment to protecting the Antarctic environment and seeking innovative solutions in the fields of science, technology, and defense.

With its cutting-edge technology and advanced capabilities, the polar ship Commander Saldanha is poised to play a vital role in future exploration missions and scientific research on the frozen continent.
