Volkswagen Prepares A Unique Offensive With The Udara Pickup, Uniting Montana Size, Strada Suspension, Turbo Hybrid Engines, And Work Versions With Single Cab To Target The Fleet Market And Redesign The Intermediate Segment In Brazil

Volkswagen is about to initiate one of the most daring movements in the Brazilian automotive market in recent years. The brand’s new intermediate pickup, provisionally named Udara, combines elements from already established models — such as the size similar to the Chevrolet Montana and the rear suspension directly inspired by the Fiat Strada — to compete in both the lifestyle and heavy-duty segments. Although the name is not yet confirmed, its arrival promises to change the landscape of compact and intermediate pickups in the country.

First of all, it’s worth noting that the information was originally disclosed by Autoesporte, which revealed new details about the VW247 project. According to the report, the German brand aims to combine robustness, modernity, and high load capacity in a package that simultaneously appeals to fleet operators and urban consumers interested in versatility.

Work Versions With Single Cab And Reinforced Architecture

To compete for the professional audience that dominates the segment, Volkswagen has adopted a clear strategy: to offer entry-level versions with single cab and a total focus on cargo. These variants will use a rear setup with rigid axle and semi-elliptical springs, exactly the same type of architecture that made the Fiat Strada the absolute leader among fleet operators. This choice seeks to address a historical weakness of the Saveiro, which has never been able to compete head-to-head with the Stellantis counterpart in terms of robustness and transport capacity.

Moreover, while maintaining dimensions close to those of the Montana, the Udara will feature a larger cargo bed and the potential to carry more weight. Volkswagen knows that by combining intermediate pickup size with proven durability solutions, it can capture a huge audience looking for affordable, resilient work vehicles with simple maintenance.

Accelerated Development, Production In Paraná, And Schedule Changes

Behind the scenes, the Udara is advancing at a rapid pace. The model will be manufactured in São José dos Pinhais (PR), as part of a large investment program of R$ 3 billion. The production decision is due to the sharing of infrastructure with the T-Cross, already assembled in the same unit.

However, according to the article from Autoesporte, there were significant changes in the launch schedule. The VW247 project, initially expected to hit the market in the first half of 2026, will now begin mass production only at the end of 2026. This means that the official launch is set for the first quarter of 2027, allowing more time for fine engineering adjustments.

The entire front end of the Udara — including the MQB A0 platform, A and B pillars, windshield, structural sheets, powertrain, and front suspension — will be shared with the T-Cross. However, from the B pillar back, the vehicle will be completely new, designed specifically to meet the demands of a pickup equipped for heavy-duty and mixed use.

Turbo Engines, Mild Hybrids, And Options For Different Profiles

In the mechanical setup, Volkswagen has prepared a varied lineup. The top versions will be equipped with the new 1.5 TSI Evo2 mild hybrid 48V, capable of delivering 150 hp and 25.5 kgfm. The engine, initially imported from Mexico, will be paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission, combining efficiency, power, and low consumption.

The entry-level versions, aimed at work, are expected to receive the well-known 200 TSI, a 1.0 turbo flex engine with 128 hp, available with either automatic or manual transmission, depending on the configuration. To complete the lineup, there will also be the medium option 250 TSI — a 1.4 turbo flex engine with 150 hp, also producing 25.5 kgfm, but without a hybrid system and coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission.

By combining all these choices, the Udara promises to cater to everyone from small entrepreneurs who need a robust single cab, to urban drivers looking for a comfortable, modern pickup suitable for family use.

Autoesporte emphasizes that the projections released so far, including images by João Kleber Amaral, are merely illustrative, but clearly showcase the vehicle’s visual proposal: robustness, elevated height, bulky bumpers, and a front end derived directly from the T-Cross.

As mentioned by Autoesporte, which exclusively revealed technical details and advances of the project, Volkswagen is treating the Udara as a game-changer in the segment. The bet combines the brand’s experience in monocoques, advancements in hybrid mechanics, and lessons learned after years of direct competition between the Saveiro and the Strada.

Therefore, even though it is unlikely to reach Strada’s sales numbers, the new pickup could steal some customers from the rival and, thus, reinforce Volkswagen’s presence in an increasingly competitive segment. Indirectly, it may also help the Tera to establish itself as the best-selling vehicle of the brand in Brazil.

Ultimately, the Udara arrives with ambition: to correct historical flaws of the Saveiro, target two different audiences, and try to establish itself as a new benchmark among Brazilian pickups.

Poderá também roubar clientes das pickups medias desde que tenha altura do solo, capacidade de carga compatível com trabalho pesado. Muita gente pensando hoje em sair do diesel.
