And Now? With Petrobras’ Contract Ending, Bolivian Company Interested in Forming Other Partnerships in Brazil. So Far, Only Two Names Have Been Mentioned: CDGN and Tradener, for Natural Gas Distribution.
Bolivia, aiming to further enhance the value of its natural gas, has big plans for 2025, as the firm supply contract with Petrobras is nearing its end. The goal is to focus on distributing the element from other clients in Brazil, such as private companies. Among the agreements made so far, names like CDGN and Tradener have already emerged as fixed partners of YPFB, the Bolivian company that is charting its future in Brazil more broadly.
Expectations for the Appreciation of Bolivian Natural Gas in Brazil Have Already Yielded Results
The appreciation can be seen in the numbers reached thus far. According to the analysis, there was an increase in the percentage of Brent in the value of Bolivian natural gas to a range between 12% and 19%, which represents a very encouraging outlook compared to the previous figures of 6% to 9%.
It is worth noting that even though the previous percentage may seem low, in total values, Bolivia had already accumulated US$ 3.01 billion in revenue from exports to Brazil and Argentina up to November. Therefore, the pursuit of natural gas appreciation could make the country an increasingly significant player in the sector.

The rise in oil prices could ensure an extra revenue of R$ 100 billion for the Federal Government, indicates a recent economic study.
Armin Dorgathen, president of YPFB, made clear his ambition to achieve this goal. To Red Patria Nueva, he stated, “We will continue to be a reliable provider so that starting in 2025, we will also have better selling prices for private distributors or with Petrobras itself,” demonstrating that contracts with private initiatives do not negate the partnership that previously existed with Petrobras.
Moreover, it is important to emphasize that the operation initiated by YPFB is focused not only on Brazil, as Argentina is also a key part to achieve the goal of expanding Bolivian natural gas.
Thus, the mandatory contractual operations between Bolivia and Argentina will also be concluded before 2025, just as in Brazil, marking a new beginning for YPFB and the contracts signed by then.
However, in the neighboring country, the conditions are different. This is because a gas pipeline, called Néstor Kirchner, is being developed on Argentine soil. Among the listed advantages, one is to contribute to greater independence for Argentina regarding Bolivian natural gas, reducing imports.
Dorgathen Has a Plan of Action in Mind to Achieve the Goals Set After the End of the Contract with Petrobras
Considering that the year 2022 is already coming to an end, 2023 is expected to be the ideal opportunity for YPFB to take new flights. According to Dorgathen, the following year will be marked by exploratory campaigns, a series of initiatives by the company’s professionals aimed at finding new partnerships that will help Bolivian gas gain more value.
As mentioned earlier, this is not solely focused on Brazil, following the end of the contract with Petrobras, but also in Argentina, benefiting everyone. Furthermore, the idea of exploring new frontiers also allows YPFB to seek to reach new territories that are still beyond its current reach.
Given the high numbers achieved so far and the prospect of continuous improvement, this appears to be a decisive factor, especially in instances that provide a more intense competition.
With the contracts already signed up to this point, even before the year ends, the chances seem positive for YPFB to further enhance the value of Bolivian natural gas.
