The Electric Bus from Mercedes-Benz
The e0500U is a standard-sized bus measuring 13.2 meters in length, has a low floor, and a total capacity of up to 83 passengers, making it identical to diesel-powered models. With a constant power of 250 horsepower, the vehicle can achieve peaks of up to 380 horsepower, all using an electric drive axle from ZF that features two motors, one in each rear wheel.
The battery range of the electric bus from Mercedes-Benz is 250 km with a recharge that can be completed in two and a half hours; it is equipped with four battery modules, two on the roof and two underneath the floor, and can also accommodate two additional modules that increase the bus’s range to 300 km. The e0500U has a total weight of 8.1 tons for its chassis and weighs 14.8 tons with the body, which is 2 tons more than typically found in diesel vehicles. It is still unknown which bodies will be used, but negotiations are already happening with companies in Brazil to establish partnerships.

Electromobility in the National Market
The president of Mercedes-Benz Brazil, Karl Deppen, reports that urban passenger transport is the best option to start the path of electromobility in the national market, in addition to allowing the export of the new chassis to other countries and continents. The garages where the buses are stored are also a strong point for the project, as they facilitate how the vehicles are charged and receive proper maintenance.
The city of São Paulo is a promising example for Mercedes-Benz in implementing the new product in the market, as the city has legislation that stipulates that the urban fleet of public transport must have 50% electric vehicles by 2027, and 100% by 2037.

Mercedes-Benz, the German automotive brand, announced today that Brazil sold about 27,000 trucks in the country last year, making it the largest country in terms of volume of trucks for the brand in the global market. The company reported that it will also invest R$ 800 million by next year and will generate over a thousand jobs to meet the growth in orders.
According to the company, Brazil became the world’s largest market for Mercedes-Benz trucks in 2020, accounting for 20% of the group’s sales. Total market sales last year were 84,650 vehicles. Mercedes-Benz stated that in 2021, the company will continue the modernization of the final assembly line (gearbox, engine, and axle) in São Bernardo do Campo (SP), in the ABC Paulista region, along with the development of services and products with connectivity and low-emission mobility technologies.
According to Deppen, president of Mercedes-Benz in Brazil, “We need to continue working on our competitiveness and we have a strong sustainability plan. These are the ingredients that define our plans for the future. We cannot ignore the relevance of macroeconomic factors for transportation, but we are convinced that Brazil is a great market and we have a long history in the country. It is important to maintain the business plan and investments because we are convinced that there is a need for transportation. That is why we are here,” he stated.
