With just a few days until the Enem 2025, students who have achieved the coveted thousand on the essay share their strategies for those seeking the same result.
The exam, administered by Inep on November 9 and 16, will require candidates to write an argumentative essay on a relevant social issue — mastering the right techniques could be the difference between a good and an excellent score.
Understanding What Inep Expects Is the First Step to Success
To start off on the right foot, seasoned Enem veterans agree: knowing the assessment criteria is essential.
Ana Flávia Pereira, who scored thousand on the Enem essay in 2019 and is currently studying Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg), highlights the importance of the Participant’s Guide.

“Read the document that Inep publishes every year — the Participant’s Guide. It contains the rules of the game: how the text will be evaluated, what is important, and examples of top-scoring essays,” explains Ana Flávia.
The material, available on Inep’s portal, provides detailed examples and warns against practices that could harm performance, such as the use of so-called “ready-made repertoires” — generic and mechanical quotes that lack a direct connection to the essay’s theme.
Choosing Smart Repertoires Can Guarantee a Thousand on the Essay
Another champion of the exam, Anna Beatriz Rebouças, who achieved thousand on the Enem essay in 2024 and was accepted into Medicine at the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), emphasizes that the secret lies in selecting sociocultural repertoires wisely.
“It doesn’t help to use beautiful or difficult quotes to impress the evaluator. What’s important is that the repertoire is appropriate to the thematic axis of the proposal. It needs to connect with the central theme, showing that you master the topic and use repertoire strategically, not randomly,” states Anna Beatriz.
Inep reinforces that memorized repertoires that do not connect to the central theme may lower the candidate’s score.
The Participant’s Guide cites as an example an essay from 2024 that mentioned the book “Utopia” by Thomas More, without contextualization, resulting in point loss in Competence II for lack of direct relation to the proposed theme.
Reviewing Your Own Essays Is One of the Best Tips for the Enem
For those in the final stretch of preparation for the exam, Lucas Felpi, who achieved thousand on the Enem essay in 2018 and graduated in Computer Science and Political Science from the University of Michigan (USA), recommends a simple but effective practice.
“Reread the essays you wrote over the year. This helps to refresh the vocabulary and repertoires you used, keeping everything fresh in your memory,” advises Felpi.
Reviewing one’s own material helps the student identify recurring mistakes, strengthen arguments, and improve mastery of the formal language — one of the five competencies evaluated by Inep.
Presentation and Calmness Also Count in the Enem Exam
Beyond content, the presentation of the Enem essay is a factor that can affect the final result. Lucas Felpi notes that text legibility and organization are fundamental.
“Take some time to write the text neatly, pay attention to your handwriting, and ensure it is legible,” recommends the former candidate.
According to Inep, illegible essays can receive a zero score. Texts with signatures, drawings, curses, or scribbles on the official essay sheet also result in a zero.
Therefore, staying calm and reviewing the text before submission is one of the smartest actions during the exam.
Timings and Practical Tips for the Day of the Enem Exam
The first stage of Enem 2025 takes place on November 9, featuring 45 questions on languages, 45 questions on human sciences, and the essay.
The second day, November 16, will include 45 questions on math and 45 questions on natural sciences.
Doors will open at 12 PM and close at 1 PM, with the exam starting at 1:30 PM (Brasília time). The end will be at 7 PM on the first Sunday and 6:30 PM on the second.
Candidates must bring:
Official document with photo (physical or digital, such as e-Título, Digital CNH, or Digital ID);
Transparent black pen (bring more than one for safety);
Confirmation of registration card;
Light snack and water in a clear bottle (without label).
Finally, it is important to wear comfortable clothes since the total duration of the exam is five and a half hours. The cell phone must remain off after entering the room.
