Initial Research on the Feasibility of Green Hydrogen Production at the Port of Suape Are Already Happening and the Chinese Company CTG Expects to Start Resource Generation in About 4 Years, Focusing on Exporting Local Production.

The Chinese company CTG (China Three Gorges Corporation) is continuing its productive feasibility research on green hydrogen at the Port of Suape, located in the state of Pernambuco, with optimistic projections for the future. If successful in the research, the company intends to focus on exporting the resource and start production for this international market within the next four years.

Green Hydrogen Venture of Chinese CTG at the Port of Suape May Start Its Production Focused on Export in the Next Four Years

The Chinese company CTG is now accelerating its productive feasibility research process for green hydrogen at the Port of Suape and expects to be successful at the end of the process to continue its venture project in the Pernambuco complex.

According to the company’s corporate vice president, José Renato Domingues, the company intends to start production in the northeastern region within the next four years, provided that the studies go as expected, and will focus on production for export operations.

CTG also announced a total investment of over R$ 45 million in research, development, and innovation (PD&I) over the next three years, focusing on the green hydrogen production market in northeastern Brazil, which has been growing strongly in recent months.

The company has partnered with the Government of Pernambuco and Senai and launched this week the TechHub Green Hydrogen, a hub aimed at developing six projects focused on the production, transportation, storage, and management of H2V in the northeastern state.

This initiative marks the company’s entry into the green hydrogen production sector in Brazil, as CTG currently has a portfolio focused on hydroelectric and wind energy generation, with an installed capacity of 8.3 GW.

“Before moving from the laboratory phase to the industrial phase, we need to overcome some technological challenges, such as the issue of electrolysis and the transportation of ammonia or methane produced from H2V. This investment we are making in the TechHub will be crucial for us,” said executive José Renato Domingues.

Chinese CTG Aims to Focus on Green Hydrogen Production for Export Operations in the Coming Years with the Venture in the Port Complex

The current scenario of the race for decarbonization of sectors, especially transportation, has led CTG to focus on export operations and aim at this segment with future green hydrogen production at the Port of Suape.

This is because José Renato Domingues states that the international geopolitical scenario of conflicts between Russia and Ukraine has made green hydrogen an increasingly sought-after product, driven by the quest for decarbonization.

Thus, the executive states that, first and foremost, CTG will make strong investments in the development of research and technology at the Port of Suape and, when it starts its green hydrogen production, will focus on exporting the resource to the international market to meet the high demand for the product.

Additionally, besides the laboratories planned in the TechHub Green Hydrogen, Termope (Neoenergia) will install a project to study energy generation for vehicles using green hydrogen.

Therefore, the state of Pernambuco will be greatly benefited by job creation and economic growth, experiencing significant socio-economic development, while CTG develops its expansion plan in the green hydrogen market.
