The New Investments in the Port Complex in the State of Santa Catarina
Cassio Schreiner says that the series of investments in the Babitonga port complex should soon include a concession to deepen the access channel to the bay by 2022, creating a toll for the entry of ships. This work in the state of Santa Catarina will increase the draft depth from 14 meters to 16 meters, allowing the reception of large container ships of 400 meters, which are currently the largest cargo vessels worldwide.
Among the investments and jobs projected for the vicinity of the Babitonga Bay in the next decade, Schreiner mentions the Southern Gas Terminal (TBG), a liquefied natural gas unit budgeted at US$ 77 million (R$ 388 million) that has just been licensed. The list also includes the Mar Azul terminal for ArcelorMittal’s cargo, the Porto Brasil Sul, and the Babitonga Grain Terminal (TGB). In total, there are more than 30 port and retro-port companies planned.

Expectation of Generating New Jobs in the State
The executive states that if all these private projects are executed, the total number of direct jobs in the region, which currently stands at 8,500, will see an increase of an additional 45,000 vacancies. The economic generation in Santa Catarina will exceed R$ 1.8 billion for the region, counting wages, taxes, and other services.
If only the Itapoá Port, with its nearly one thousand employees, contributes R$ 30 million annually to the municipality, the positive impact of these projects for the region is expected. Cassio Schreiner says they are talking about São Francisco do Sul, Barra do Sul, Garuva, Itapoá, and that the entire region of the state of Santa Catarina will benefit.

The Itapoá Port on the northern coast of Santa Catarina has completed a decade of operation with encouraging results. The company is in 5th place among Brazilian ports operating with containers. According to the Antaq (National Agency of Waterway Transportation), the terminal generates 950 direct jobs and more than five thousand indirect jobs.
The Itapoá Port created the RPPN (Permanent Preservation Reserve of Nature) Padre Piet Van der Aart, which compensated ten times the area for the terminal expansion. Associated with the RPPN Volta Velha, this is one of the largest private Atlantic Forest reserves in Santa Catarina and an important environmental asset for Itapoá. The port also monitors the water quality of the Babitonga Bay and conducts the reuse and recycling of waste generated in its operations.
