Duplication and Restoration of the PRC-466 Concrete Advances in Guarapuava, with Completed Bridge, Rigid Pavement Under Execution and New Drainage and Lighting Systems in Final Phase. The Investment Exceeds R$ 139 Million.
The duplication and restoration of the PRC-466, between Guarapuava and the district of Palmeirinha, reached 54% execution in the most recent measurement in August.
The project, managed and overseen by the DER/PR, an agency linked to the Infrastructure and Logistics Secretary (SEIL), covers 11.52 kilometers and totals R$ 139,785,485.97 in investments.
The work utilizes whitetopping, a rigid pavement technique where the existing surface serves as a base for a new concrete layer.

Progress of Works and Completed Deliveries
One of the most relevant structures of the project, the new bridge over the Coutinho River, is completed.
In parallel, both the earthworks of the new track and the improvements to the current pavement, which will integrate with the base of the rigid pavement, are nearing the final stretch.
In the service balance, the rigid pavement—including the new and existing track—has reached 50% execution, representing the largest financial component of the contract.
Additionally, the implementation of a cellular gallery and the drainage system is advancing, which combines unprecedented devices in the duplicated track with the adaptation of structures already present in the section.
What Is Whitetopping

The term whitetopping identifies the solution in which the existing pavement is utilized as a base for the application of a new layer of concrete.
Instead of removing the entire previous surface, the intervention incorporates the existing platform, increasing the rigidity of the structure and preparing the road for high traffic volumes.
In the case of the PRC-466, this approach is applied simultaneously on both the duplicated track and the original track, providing uniformity to the overall structure and accelerating the intervention schedule.
Drainage and Final Steps
As the structural and base works advance, the team is executing water drainage along the segment.
The package includes new devices in the duplicated lane and the adaptation of those already installed on the current road, an essential measure to preserve the rigid pavement and reduce risks of damage from infiltration.
The road lighting is also being implemented in the section under the State’s responsibility.
The expectation is that this will be one of the last services to be completed, along with horizontal and vertical signage and complementary services.
Among them is the grass planting, indicated in the planning as scheduled for February of next year.
These items are completed after the areas of greatest structural impact, in order to ensure functionality and safety in traffic.
Extension and Investment
The contract covers 11.52 km between the urban area of Guarapuava and the district of Palmeirinha, in the Central-South region of Paraná.
The total investment is R$ 139,785,485.97, under the management of the Department of Highways of Paraná (DER/PR), with oversight from SEIL.

In allocating resources, the schedule prioritizes the execution of rigid pavement and drainage structures, stages that determine the road’s performance over time.
Bridge Over the Coutinho River
With the Coutinho River bridge already delivered, the corridor gains increased capacity and hydraulic safety.
The release of this special structure allows concentrating efforts on finalizing the bed of the duplicated track and on the requalification of the existing pavement, where the layer of concrete for whitetopping will be applied.
The completion of the bridge reduces interferences in local traffic and eliminates typical bottlenecks from temporary crossings during construction.
Lighting and Signage
In roadway sections, lighting and signage typically feature among the final phases, when the pavement is already in definitive conditions.
In the PRC-466, the planning foresees the complete installation of light fixtures, execution of horizontal signage (lane painting), and vertical signage (signs), along with finishing touches such as vegetative covering.
This sequence preserves the quality of the materials applied and facilitates fine-tuning of devices after the structural layers are delivered.
Urban Lighting in Guarapuava
Residents of Guarapuava were recently benefited by an improvement in the urban perimeter of the PRC-466.
The Guarapuava City Hall, with authorization from DER/PR, executed the recovery of road lighting in this segment.
According to the municipal administration, night traffic has become safer after the restoration of the system.

The municipality has also committed to preventively maintain the network of energy in local posts, frequently affected by cable thefts and acts of vandalism.
Next Deliveries
As the new track takes shape and the concrete advances over the old pavement, the services of drainage, cellular gallery and remaining earthworks continue to be active.
The goal is to complete the heavy infrastructure and subsequently finalize lighting, signage, and finishes.
The choice for whitetopping integrates the old pavement with the new concrete coating, optimizing the intervention and preparing the section for operation after duplication.
With the bridge completed, half of the rigid pavement executed, and drainage and lighting fronts underway, what impacts do you expect on the flow and safety of the PRC-466 when duplication is fully opened to traffic?
