The new electric hatch from MG arrives in the Brazilian market amid the fiercest competition among electrified compacts, with attributes that reposition the brand and expand the competitive landscape in an increasingly observed segment.

MG4 Urban arrives in Brazil to compete in the compact electric space

MG Motor confirmed the arrival of the MG4 Urban in the Brazilian market and will expand its presence in the electric segment with a hatch positioned to compete with BYD Dolphin and Geely EX2.

The launch is scheduled for June 2026, with two battery options aimed at the electrified compact audience.

In the configuration announced for Brazil, the MG4 Urban will have a front electric motor of 163 hp and 25.5 kgfm.

With this setup, the model surpasses the Geely EX2, which has 116 hp, and also the entry-level BYD Dolphin, which has 95 hp.

Within this group, it is only below the BYD Dolphin Plus, which delivers 204 hp.

Batteries, range, and position against rivals

The brand has also defined two batteries for the car.

The initial version will have 42.8 kWh and a range of 323 km according to the WLTP cycle.

The configuration with the larger battery will use 53.9 kWh and a range of 415 km, also following the WLTP standard.

However, direct comparison with rivals requires caution.

This is because models sold in Brazil often disclose homologated numbers from different cycles.

Still, the data presented by the manufacturer places the MG4 Urban among the compact electric hatches with the highest range within this market segment.

In the Brazilian market, the BYD Dolphin claims a range of 291 km in its PBEV cycle, while the Dolphin Plus states 330 km.

The Geely EX2 features a 39.4 kWh battery and 116 hp power.

In this scenario, the MG4 Urban arrives with specifications that place it at the center of the competition among compact electrics.

Dimensions of the MG4 Urban and interior space

The dimensions of the new generation help explain this positioning.

The model presented abroad measures 4.39 meters in length, 1.84 meters in width, 1.55 meters in height, and has a 2.75-meter wheelbase.

The trunk capacity is reported as 471 liters in measurements released for the Chinese market.

If this volume is maintained in the Brazilian configuration, the hatch could rank among the most spacious models in the category.

However, so far, the manufacturer has not detailed whether there will be differences in local specifications.

Safety, driving assistance, and multimedia

MG also stated that the hatch will arrive with driving assistance features.

Among the expected items are six airbags, autonomous emergency braking systems, lane keeping assistance, and collision warning.

The final list of equipment for Brazil will still be disclosed by the company.

Inside, the expectation is for a 10.25-inch multimedia center with smartphone integration.

However, the automaker has not yet officially presented all versions or the complete configuration of the model that will be sold in the country.

Design of the MG electric hatch

The design of the MG4 Urban follows a smoother line than that adopted in the MG4 already sold by the brand.

The front features LED headlights, clean lines, and a bumper with a lower air intake.

On the sides, the hatch retains conventional door handles, instead of the flush or retractable pieces seen in some of the more recent electrics.

The wheels are 17 inches.

At the rear, the taillights are connected by an illuminated strip that crosses the trunk lid, a feature that has been used by different manufacturers in the segment.

MG Motor in Brazil and electrification strategy

The arrival of the model comes at a time of reorganization of MG’s operations in the country.

The brand has British origins, with roots dating back to 1924, but has been under the control of SAIC Motor since 2007, following the acquisition of Nanjing Automobile.

In Brazil, the manufacturer’s first stint was brief, between 2011 and 2013.

The return in a new phase occurred with a focus on electric vehicles, a move aligned with the company’s recent strategy in other markets.

In its Brazilian relaunch, the manufacturer began operating with three electrics: the MG S5, the sporty convertible MG Cyberster, and the current generation MG4.

The official website of the Brazilian operation already displays these models, although some pages are still being updated.

The MG4 sold today in the country reports 364 km of range according to Inmetro, 190 hp, and a driver assistance package.

Thus, the MG4 Urban is likely to occupy a segment below it within the national range, focusing on a more competitive volume segment.

Brand statement and competition with BYD Dolphin and Geely EX2

In a statement attributed to the launch, Thiago Marques, head of Marketing and Product at MG Motor Brazil, stated that the arrival of the MG4 Urban represents a new moment for the brand in the country and will help expand Brazilian consumers’ access to innovation and technology.

The statement reinforces the positioning adopted by the company for its local expansion.

With this move, MG begins to compete in one of the most contested niches among electrics in Brazil.

The BYD Dolphin has already established a commercial presence in the segment, while the Geely EX2 entered the market with an appeal focused on entry pricing.

By confirming the MG4 Urban, the brand adds a new competitor to the fray.

The model was announced with two battery options, power exceeding that of some direct rivals, and a technology package that will still be detailed for the Brazilian market.

Official pricing and the final list of versions are still pending disclosure by the manufacturer.
