Example From 1962 Exposed in Campos do Jordão Brings Preserved and Restored Period Accessories, Including Automotive Coffee Maker and an External Cooling System, as Well as Rare Items of Lighting, Convenience and Family Provenance Presented by the Museum.

A 1962 Volkswagen Beetle is often associated with a car of simple design, marked by history and popularity.

An example on display in Campos do Jordão, in the interior of São Paulo, is presented with an unusual set of period items: about 50 accessories installed when the vehicle was new and restored, including coffee maker and an external cooling system used as an alternative to the first automotive “refrigerators.”

The car is part of the exhibition of the CARDE, a museum that brings together rare automobiles and works of art in the Mantiqueira Mountains.

According to information released by the space, the Beetle was purchased brand new by the grandfather of the last owner, Caio Ramos de Toledo, and has remained in the same family.

The restoration, according to the museum, was carried out by Vinícius Mamede, with the aim of preserving the configuration and accessories compatible with the period.

Beetle 1962 With Period Accessories: External Item Draws Attention

Before even opening the door, an item installed on the right side draws attention for protruding from the bodywork.

This is the Thermador Car Cooler, a device that appeared decades before automotive air conditioning became common and was marketed as a cooling solution for cars.

The described operation for this type of accessory is based on ice or cold water placed in an external compartment.

During the journey, the occupant could activate a mechanism to moisten an internal sponge; this way, the air entering the cabin passed through this material, reducing the perceived temperature.

When the sponge dried, the process could be repeated to maintain the effect.

In addition to this component, the Beetle incorporates external items mainly related to lighting and signaling.

Among them, the set is described with a spotlight next to the driver’s window, auxiliary headlights, and additional parts for license plate and braking, presented as restored according to period standards.

Other mentioned accessories include rear wheel skirts, associated with the North American market, and Coker Classic tires with white walls, a style used in various models at the time.

The list also mentions a specific rear grill for cooling the engine, a rain and insect deflector on the hood, as well as an Australian emblem and a flag holder described as original.

Coffee Maker in the Car and Convenience Items Inside the Beetle

In the cabin, the most prominent item is the Paluxette coffee maker, made in Germany, described as an accessory designed to work connected to the car’s cigarette lighter.

According to the vehicle’s presentation, the equipment uses electric power to heat water and prepare coffee in the same set.

The dashboard and other interior points feature items listed as automotive accessories of the period.

Among them, there appears a flower vase intended for use in cars, pieces associated with smoking habits, compass, fan, and a Blaupunkt radio.

The set is presented as part of a configuration aimed at providing the maximum number of items available at the time for comfort and practicality during travel.

Also mentioned is a domestically made item described as rare: a baby seat from the Hércules brand, positioned in the rear.

According to the car’s description, the interior includes blinds from the United States, seat covers attributed to Kamei, and a ceiling net for storing objects, a solution used in some travel vehicles at that time.

Other components cited in the cabin include Kamei knee breakers defined as a padded protection on the dashboard, as well as a Hazet toolbox and a steering wheel with rim and covers also described as modified and unusual.

In the museum’s presentation, the sum of these items helps to support the characterization of the car as a “complete package” of period accessories.

Museum CARDE and Family Provenance Influence Reading on Value

The CARDE states that it uses part of the automotive collection to compose the narrative of the space, merging automobiles, art, and design.

In the specific case of the 1962 Beetle, the museum highlights the sequence of ownership within the same family and the restoration aimed at preserving the accessories and period configuration.

The institution also asserts that the value of the car should not be attributed only to the state of conservation or the cost of the installed items.

“Its true meaning lies in the history it represents – something difficult to measure”, informed the museum’s advisory to UOL Carros.

Despite this approach, there is no official evaluation released with a fixed number.

The reference text itself indicates that the estimate is usually made by comparison with Beetles of similar age and conservation that presented some rarity and have recently gone through auctions, which opens up the possibility for the price to reach hundreds of thousands of reais, without establishing an exact value.

Within the collectibles market, provenance, rarity of accessories, and restoration documentation are factors used by buyers and sellers to justify negotiations, according to common practices in the segment.
