When we think of supercars, the image that usually comes to mind includes roaring twin-turbo V8 engines with a thunderous power. However, Koenigsegg, a Swedish company known for its disruptive innovations, has decided to break all paradigms with the Gemera, the world’s first “Mega-GT”. The big surprise? Instead of a V8, the Gemera is equipped with a 2.0 three-cylinder engine.

That’s right, a three-cylinder engine that defies conventions by producing an impressive 600 horsepower. But how is this possible? Let’s dive into the technical details and the revolutionary engineering behind this feat.

Understanding Freevalve Technology: Heart of the TFG Engine

The engine of the Koenigsegg Gemera, affectionately nicknamed TFG (Tiny Friendly Giant), is a masterpiece of automotive innovation. Utilizing technology in development for nearly 20 years by Koenigsegg, known as Freevalve, the engine dispenses with traditional camshafts. Instead, it uses individual electro-pneumatic actuators to control each valve. This allows for more precise control of valve opening and closing, optimizing both fuel efficiency and performance.

Moreover, the engine is super square, with a diameter of 95 mm and a stroke of 93.5 mm, making it easier to achieve high RPM without sacrificing durability. Producing peak power at 7,500 rpm and with a rev limit of 8,500 rpm, the torque of 61.1 kgfm is reached just below 3,000 rpm and remains flat up to 7,000 rpm. The TFG not only surpasses its rivals in terms of specific power but also redefines what is possible in compact-sized engines.

The Twin-Turbo Setup: Maximizing Response and Efficiency

The Gemera does not settle for impressing only with its innovative valve system. It also incorporates a twin-turbo setup with sequential turbos. A smaller turbo acts at low RPM, providing quick response and an efficient torque increase. As the RPMs increase, a larger second turbo comes into play, ensuring that the engine delivers consistent power in the mid and high RPM ranges. This arrangement not only improves engine response but also allows the use of larger turbochargers without the traditional compromises.
