Enabled By About 140 Contracts For Free Consumers Of Energy, The Wind Farm Campo Largo 2 Consolidates Investment Strategy In Renewable Generation
ENGIE received the commercial operation authorization from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) for the last three of the 11 wind power plants of the Wind Farm Campo Largo 2, located in the municipalities of Umburanas and Sento Sé in Bahia. With an investment of R$ 1.6 billion, the project added 361.2 MW to the Company’s portfolio and to the national electric system. As a result, ENGIE now has 1,262.6 MW of installed capacity in wind energy in Brazil, of which more than 1 GW is in Bahia alone, considering, in addition to Campo Largo 2, the Wind Farms Campo Largo 1 and Umburanas, which began operations in 2018 and 2019.

“The existing synergies in the region, including the use of the same substation, transmission line, construction site infrastructure, and internal accesses, allowed for the acceleration of the delivery of this project. Furthermore, even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, the high commitment and experience of our teams in the field were differentiators in managing this project amid so many challenges,” said Eduardo Sattamini, CEO and Investor Relations Director of ENGIE Brasil Energia.

Construction Of The Wind Farm Campo Largo 2 Began In July 2019
The construction of the Wind Farm Campo Largo 2 began in July 2019 and the first wind turbines started being assembled in July 2020, an activity carried out in parallel with the expansion of the substation and the implementation of medium voltage networks. The commercial operation of the first park took place in February 2021, and in August, the assembly of the 86 wind turbines and the commissioning of all machines were completed.
Due to the magnitude of the project, the logistics for transporting large equipment and the Covid-19 pandemic were among the biggest challenges of the construction, which generated approximately 2,200 jobs, reaching a peak of 1,500 workers at the height of production, across more than 40 parallel worksites. About 4,600 tons of steel and 47,000 m³ of concrete were used, in addition to the implementation of 75 kilometers of internal accesses and 101 km of medium voltage networks, with over a thousand poles.
Commitment To Communities
Seeking to promote social transformation and contribute to sustainable development and improvement of the quality of life of local communities, ENGIE invested over R$ 17 million in social projects in the Umburanas and Sento Sé region since 2016, including initiatives in the areas of health, sports, safety, education, infrastructure, leisure, among others.
“As generators and transmitters of energy, we are deeply connected to the communities around our plants and projects, acting together to enable social and human development and promote more opportunities for prosperity for all. These are inseparable aspects of our business,” explains Sattamini.
Among the initiatives implemented throughout the construction and operation of the wind farms Campo Largo 1, Umburanas, and Campo Largo 2, notable actions include skills training and income generation, such as the establishment of a sewing workshop and a community garden; construction of a community center, square, and sports court, renovation of a school, and creation of a Digital Empowerment Center, generating learning and entrepreneurship opportunities for the local community.
Investments In Wind Energy
To contribute to the Group’s global goal of having over 90% of its EBITDA from renewable sources, ENGIE continues to invest heavily in wind energy.
Now, the Company’s efforts are focused on the Wind Farm Santo Agostinho, located in the municipalities of Lajes and Pedro Avelino, 120 km from Natal in Rio Grande do Norte. With investments of R$ 2.3 billion, Santo Agostinho will have an installed capacity of 434 MW, with 70 wind turbines, and is expected to start operation by March 2023.
“The expansion of wind energy in Brazil, given its potential, is at the center of ENGIE’s growth strategy. We will continue to contribute to making the national electric grid increasingly cleaner, attentive to all opportunities to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy in the country,” concludes Sattamini.
