Recently, Assaí Wholesale Acquired 71 Units from Grupo Pão de Açúcar and Ended the Extra Hypermarket Model
Grupo Pão de Açúcar has somewhat shifted its focus away from hypermarkets after selling 71 units of the Extra Hyper brand to Assaí Wholesale for R$ 5.2 billion. Not all Extra Hyper stores were sold; there are still 32 that are expected to be converted into units of other formats by Grupo Pão de Açúcar.
Assaí is part of the same controlling group, the French Casino, and until March, was one of the brands under Grupo Pão de Açúcar. The companies announced the spin-off over a year ago, and in March, Assaí Wholesale debuted on the stock exchange with the code ASAI3. According to the president of Assaí Wholesale, Belmiro Gomes, products in a cash-and-carry format can be up to 15% cheaper than in a hypermarket. According to the president, due to the greater price pressure and the drop in income, the cash-and-carry format is in higher demand.
