The construction of five new campuses of the Federal Institutes (IFs) in Rio Grande do Sul is expected to revolutionize the educational and economic landscape of the state. The measure, announced by the official channels of the Ministry of Education (MEC), promises to generate about 7 thousand job openings, mainly in technical courses integrated with high school.
This advance, in addition to expanding access to quality education, also represents a significant boost for the construction sector, which will benefit from the works for the implementation of the new campuses.
Expansion Of Federal Institutes (IFs)
According to the rector of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of RS (IFRS), Júlio Heck, the initiative is considered historic for the entire federal network and for the state of Rio Grande do Sul itself.

Heck emphasizes the transformative role of the federal institutes in people’s lives and in the development of the regions where they are located.
The implementation of the new campuses is planned in strategic municipalities such as Porto Alegre, Caçapava do Sul, São Luiz Gonzaga, São Leopoldo, and Gramado, thus expanding the presence of the IFs in the state.
Currently, Rio Grande do Sul already has three Federal Institutes, with the campuses distributed across more than 40 municipalities.
The expectation is that the operation of the new campuses will start soon; however, the Planalto Palace has not yet announced an official date for the start of activities.
According to IFRS, the implementation process will take a few years, considering various aspects such as construction, competitions, consultations, and identification of regional demands.
Costs And Planning For The Construction Of The New Campus Of The Federal Institute
Each new campus has an estimated cost of R$ 25 million, with R$ 15 million allocated to infrastructure and R$ 10 million for the acquisition of furniture and new equipment.
The number of teachers in each unit will be defined according to criteria established by the MEC, based on previous phases that included 70 teachers and 45 technicians between 2011 and 2014.
The federal government emphasizes that the construction of the new campuses of the Federal Institutes will have a significant impact on the construction sector, generating job openings and income.
Moreover, the new Federal Institutes, when fully operational, will be catalysts for local and regional development, providing more opportunities for professional qualification and excellent education for the youth of the state.
