Construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel Promises to Be the Mega Solution for Transportation in BH, Facing Chaotic Traffic and Bringing Economic and Environmental Benefits.

The construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel is about to become a reality, marking a new era for urban mobility and logistics in the state capital. Slated to begin in June 2025, the project is hailed as a mega solution for transportation in BH, promising to ease intense traffic, reduce accidents, and boost the local economy.

Traffic in BH: A Historical Problem

According to 2023 data from the Dutch company TomTom Traffic, Belo Horizonte ranks 41st among the cities with the worst traffic in the world and fourth in Brazil. Drivers spend an average of 109 hours annually in traffic, facing 22 minutes to travel just 10 km. Part of the problem is caused by the heavy flow of cargo vehicles passing through the city, as BH is a strategic connection point between the Southeast, Midwest, and Northeast regions.

The lack of a functional ring road forces trucks and other interstate vehicles to use urban roads, such as Cristiano Machado and Antônio Carlos avenues, worsening congestion and increasing wear and tear on urban infrastructure.

What Is the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel?

Construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel Will Remove 15 Thousand Trucks from the Streets, Save 50 Minutes per Trip, and Generate 15 Thousand Jobs

The construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel is designed to divert heavy vehicle traffic from the city center, connecting 11 municipalities in the metropolitan area with a modern and safe layout of approximately 100 km.

With an investment of R$ 3 billion from the state, resulting from an agreement with the mining company Vale, and an additional R$ 2 billion from the responsible concessionaire, the project aims to reduce travel times by up to 50 minutes and remove about 15 thousand trucks from urban streets daily.

Benefits for All

The project is a true mega solution for transportation in BH, providing benefits not only for mobility, but also for the economy and safety. The Class Zero standard project includes tunnels, bridges, and cutting-edge technologies for monitoring and toll collection in a “free flow” system, where drivers pay only for the distance traveled.

Moreover, the economic impact will be significant: an increase of 7% to 13% in the GDP of the metropolitan area is expected over 10 years, along with industrial growth of up to 1.3%. During construction, around 15 thousand direct and indirect jobs will be created.

Challenges and Controversies

Despite the benefits, the construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel faces challenges. Social and environmental movements, like the Nascentes Commission, express concerns about the environmental impact in preservation areas, such as the APA Vargem das Flores. Recently, the route was altered to avoid sensitive areas, but there are still questions involving traditional communities and the Federal Public Ministry.

With dialogue and planning, the construction of the Belo Horizonte Rodoanel promises to transform the reality of traffic and regional logistics. The project is more than a ring road: it is a milestone for sustainable development and urban mobility in BH, a true mega solution for transportation in BH that could elevate the city to a new level.
