Tamandaré Class Corvettes Will Be Renamed to Frigates and the Decision Pleases Both the Germans of ThyssenKrupp and the Navy Officials
The Águas Azuis consortium will receive confirmation of good news upon signing the contract with the Brazilian Navy regarding its victory in the bidding for the construction of four Tamandaré Class Corvettes (CCTs)
The CCTs will be classified as FCTs (Tamandaré Class Frigates) at the signing of the contract between the MB and the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine System (TKMS), until then they will be called NCT (Tamandaré Class Ships).
The Navy has already sent documents to Thyssen requesting that the contract details be ready by next November, as the intention of the Navy Commander, Fleet Admiral Ilques Barbosa Júnior, is to sign the contract on December 13, taking advantage of the celebrations of Sailor’s Day.
Emgpepron (the company responsible for managing the Navy’s naval projects) intends to make the first payment to the Águas Azuis consortium in the days following the contract signing,
which is estimated to be around 15% of the total price of the ships, a value that should surpass €2 billion.

Decision That Pleased Everyone
The decision to adopt an expanded version of the MEKO A-100 (close to the A-200 in the figure below) for the new FCT series was celebrated, both by the German Thyssen and by Navy officials, who have always wanted a sturdier ship with more muscle to face more complex seas and missions.
The idea of the Navy officials, since the beginning of the CCT bidding, was to transform the ships with a displacement of around 2,000 tons (already sold to Malaysia and Poland) so that it could reach up to about 3,200 tons, or even a bit more.

The Brazilian Navy Intends to Bid for a Second Batch of Escorts Around 2026, along with the delivery of the third FCT ship and the fourth already in the final construction phase.
To this end, the Navy aims to create a good environment with Thyssen during the negotiations for the FCTs and also obtain a good offer from the company to re-equip the three Niterói Class frigates.
