Renovation of an abandoned boat changes the couple’s routine, becomes a luxury yacht project, involves a $15,000 engine swap, and shows the details of a new life on board

An abandoned boat purchased for $5,000 became the center of a radical life change. Matt and Kristen traded their routine in Florida for a risky bet, living on board and doing a boat renovation almost from scratch, even without professional experience.

The crossing to Puerto Rico exposed serious problems, increased expenses, and made it clear that the purchase price was just the beginning. The investigation was published by Sailing Good, Bad, and Ugly, a YouTube channel about life on board. The project involved a cracked hull, rotten wood, bad windows, steering failures, and an engine at the end of its life.

The plan was to transform the vessel into a luxury yacht to serve as a home. Along the way, the couple faced heavy seas, heavy rain, daily fees at the shipyard, a hurricane, and a long renovation done with a lot of improvisation, savings, and manual labor.

Cheap purchase turned into an expensive project and revealed defects all around

The price of $5,000 caught attention, but the state of the boat was critical. There were holes in the hull and deck, rotten wood parts, compromised windows, absence of sails, and an old engine about to fail.

Even with this scenario, the vessel fit within the couple’s budget. The idea was never to buy something ready to sail. The goal was to take on an abandoned boat and transform it into a home, with modern finishes and a safe structure for life on board.

Before the major renovation, the couple spent one year making temporary repairs while maintaining their jobs and saving money. This period served to get the boat in the water and test how far it could go.

Trip to Puerto Rico showed that the boat could not take it anymore

The departure from Fort Lauderdale to Puerto Rico served as a real test. The trip revealed hidden flaws and left the vessel at its limit, especially during the passage through the Mona Passage, a very difficult sea area in the Caribbean.

There were 40 hours of intense pressure on the structure. The engine stopped, makeshift patches were threatened, and the boat only reached its destination after much effort. In an extreme moment, Matt had to use the small dinghy to push the 20,000 lb vessel that was no longer responding from the main engine.

When the boat was taken out of the water, the damage was fully revealed. The hull was covered in barnacles, there was rust in several areas, and the keel showed a large hole and a deep crack. The vessel had narrowly escaped sinking.

Hull, deck, and painting consumed time, money, and energy

With the structure exposed, the priority became the exterior. The hull received heavy washing, filling with epoxy putty, and a lot of sanding until it was smooth. The deck also required cuts and opening areas with rot, including near the mast, a sensitive point for safety.

The couple tried to cut costs by doing almost everything themselves. Even so, expenses grew. The shipyard fees were $80 per day, which further tightened the budget. After delays, they had already spent over $2,000 just on staying there.

The painting became one of the most labor-intensive stages of the boat renovation. The heat in Puerto Rico reduced the application time, and the rains interrupted work several times a day. To achieve a more refined finish, Allgrip paint was used, chosen for its shine and resistance to salt and sun.

The first attempt to put the boat back in the water ended in a new problem. The steering failed due to an old part destroyed by time. The part had to be remade manually, and the vessel returned to the shipyard before successfully entering the sea a second time.

New $15,000 engine changed the course of the project

The old engine could no longer hold up. The swap required an investment of $15,000, an amount that alone exceeded three times the price paid for the abandoned boat. It was the heaviest decision of the entire project, but also the most important to enable the new routine at sea.

The removal of the old engine was dangerous. Weighing about 300 lb, it did not come out of the compartment easily. The couple improvised a system using the mast itself as support until they managed to remove the part and take it by water to the shipyard.

The information was disclosed by Sailing Good, Bad, and Ugly, a YouTube channel about life on board. The new engine chosen was a Beta Marine with 30 horsepower, described as much quieter than a regular diesel, operating between 50 to 60 dB.

The installation also required new filters, a cooling system, control cables, and precise alignment. In one of the tests, there was an oil leak because the filter had not been replaced, but the engine worked after the correction. The vessel also received a new autopilot worth $2,000, an item that changes the routine on long crossings.

The interior became a real home with new bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom

After the exterior and the engine, the longest phase of the visual change began. The old interior had rotten wood, worn partitions, bad cabinets, and makeshift solutions that were no longer suitable for comfortable living.

The living room, kitchen, bathroom, and forward cabin underwent demolition and reconstruction. Matt rebuilt structures with marine plywood, created removable furniture to facilitate future inspections, and replaced old parts with more practical solutions for life on board.

In the kitchen, new drawers, a retractable trash can, sliding cabinets, and a PVC countertop appeared, a material chosen for being lightweight and water-resistant. In the bathroom, a removable niche, renewed cabinet, porcelain sink, and a cleaner-looking finish were added.

The front cabin also changed a lot. The couple first tried using wood painted white, but the result was unsatisfactory. Everything was redone with PVC panels covered in mold-resistant vinyl, along with new LED lighting. The goal was always clear: to transform the old hull into a luxury yacht with a more modern and functional appearance.

Hurricane, leaks, and a bad electrical system increased the pressure

Even with much of the work progressing, the abandoned boat still suffered from leaks. Water was entering through points connected to the mast structure, which required new sealing to protect the ceiling and the already renovated furniture.

The situation became even more serious when a hurricane approached. The couple removed exposed items, reinforced the mooring with extra cables, and spent the night under tension. Amid the storm, Matt even helped secure a friend’s boat that had come loose.

After the storm, the work continued with a focus on important details. One of the biggest risks was in the electrical system, which had already shown signs of danger in the past. The old wiring was reorganized, the panel received safer separation between circuits, and new dimmable lights made the environment more comfortable.

The interior also gained a 30 lb washing machine, a beverage cabinet, new vinyl flooring, saloon doors with insect screens, and lighting control via an app. Gradually, what was a tired hull began to function as a real home.

How much did it cost to transform the abandoned boat into a luxury yacht

At the end of the work, the total cost of the transformation reached $25,479. This amount included materials, painting, parts, engine, internal improvements, and direct expenses of the process.

In addition to the money spent, Matt calculated over $100,000 in hours of work invested in the recovery of the vessel. The number helps to show the magnitude of the effort involved in the boat renovation.

The final result delivered much more than appearance. The old abandoned boat became a home, a life project, and a symbol of resilience for a couple who faced mechanical failures, cracks in the hull, high expenses, and months of constant pressure.

The transformation ended, therefore, with another significant change. After the entire journey, Matt proposed to Kristen. With the vessel ready to return to the sea, the couple closed a difficult chapter and opened another, now with the promise to move forward in their new life on board.

The story shows how a cheap purchase can hide huge problems, but also turn into a complete reconstruction project when there is planning, persistence, and a willingness to learn. The case also makes it clear that the real cost of recovering an old boat goes far beyond the purchase price.
