Tests of the 5G luminaire in Curitiba began on the 22nd and function as internet antennas via Wi-Fi
Curitiba joins a new phase as smart city and begins testing a 5G light fixture capable of providing internet via Wi-Fi in public spaces. The tests started on the last June 22nd and gave Curitiba the title of first city in the world to have this technology. The performance of this device is being evaluated by a partnership signed between the City of Curitiba, the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI), the Ministry of Communications and the operator Ligga Telecom.
In practice, the 5G luminaire will function as a service hub, providing free internet via Wi-Fi to public places close to it. The installation was carried out on the corner of Avenida Cândido de Abreu and Rua Lysimaco Ferreira da Costa, close to the city hall. Want to know more? New technology will bring benefits to various sectors of the city such as Education, Telemedicine and Public Safety
The 5G luminaire innovation is another step towards consolidation of Curitiba within the concept of smart cities. In addition to providing an internet 100 times faster than 4G, this device has other functions such as telemanagement, monitoring cameras, traffic light management, noise sensors and even facial recognition.

This technology will benefit various sectors of society, especially Education and Public Safety, through more present management in public spaces. In summary, the 5G luminaire will be able to spread the internet signal via Wi-Fi and bring greater connectivity to residents. However, in this initial testing phase, wi-fi will not yet be available to consumers, only for equipment that needs the internet to function. But if all goes well, residents will soon have access to it.
“It is one of the solutions for installing the necessary infrastructure for the new mobile network, which requires a high number of antennas for 5G technology to operate in cities”.
Mayor of Curitiba, Rafael Greca, during the inauguration ceremony (2022).
Greater Curitiba was chosen because it is already a great model of a smart city worldwide, which will allow the city hall to rent antennas for mobile phone companies
Curitiba was chosen to receive the tests because it is already among the great smart cities in the world and has advanced governance, technology and innovation models. The luminaire brings even more visibility and contributes to innovation.
“The partnership with a city as mature as Curitiba will really encourage the development of new services for citizens and companies”.
Igor Calvet, president of the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) (2022)
The city hall, which manages public lighting, may also see an increase in revenue through the leasing of 5G antennas to mobile phone companies. The population will be able to have access to a fast internet speed and free of charge in the future, when the tests show positive results.
5G luminaire starts with tests in Curitiba, but will continue in other cities in Brazil
Os 5G luminaire tests are occurring in bands with a record between 27.5 and 27.9 GHz (gigahertz). Installation and performance evaluation are part of the Conecta 5G program, which will stimulate the new internet speed for Brazil. The companies Nokia and Juganu were responsible for developing the device, with Qualcomm technology. However, other cities will also receive the tests soon:
- Araguaina (TO);
- Canaã dos Carajás (PA);
- Ceará-Mirim (RN);
- Foz do Iguaçu (PR);
- Jaraguá do Sul (SC);
- Juiz de Fora (MG);
- Maceió (AL);
- Paraipaba (CE);
- Parauapebas (PA);
- Pato Branco (PR);
- Petrolina (PE);
- Peaks (PI);
- Sorocaba (SP).
The bodies responsible for the tests are still analyzing which will be the next streets to receive the innovation in Curitiba.
