The British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, Famous for Paradise Beaches and Luxury Tourism, Discovered a New Source of Wealth: The Sale of “.ai” Domains, Boosted by the Global AI Boom
In the 1980s, when the internet was still in its infancy, each country received its own domain extension. The United Kingdom got .uk, Brazil got .br — and the small Anguilla, a British overseas territory with only 16,000 inhabitants, inherited .ai.
At the time, no one imagined that those two simple letters, associated with artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence), would become a gold mine four decades later.
With the explosion of AI technologies in recent years, the .ai domain has become the preferred choice for startups and industry giants. Tech companies and independent creators are paying impressive amounts to secure their addresses with the most coveted ending of the digital era.
An example is Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of HubSpot, who shelled out US$ 700,000 (about R$ 3.7 million) to acquire the domain you.ai. In an interview with BBC, Shah stated that he bought the address because “he had the idea to create an AI product that would allow people to build digital versions of themselves, capable of performing specific tasks on their behalf.”

Explosion of Registrations and Million-Dollar Profits
The phenomenon is so significant that the number of websites registered with the .ai domain has grown more than tenfold in five years, doubling in just the last 12 months, according to data from a portal that tracks domain name registrations worldwide.
For a tourist-dependent island, this growth represents an economic revolution. According to the Department of Statistics of Anguilla, the territory received 111,639 visitors in the last year — a historic record. Still, the tourism, which accounts for around 37% of the island’s revenue, suffers from seasonality and losses caused by fall hurricanes, which frequently hit the region.
The .ai domain, therefore, has emerged as a stable and strategic alternative to diversify the local economy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) highlighted, in a recent report, that income from domain sales “represents a strong contribution to Anguilla’s economic resilience.”
In its budget proposal for 2025, the government stated that it has raised 105.5 million Eastern Caribbean dollars (US$ 39 million, about R$ 207 million) from domain registrations, which accounted for 23% of the island’s total revenue in 2024. Projections indicate that earnings are expected to rise to US$ 49 million in 2025 and US$ 51 million in 2026.
The Partnership That Protects the Island’s New Fortune
To ensure that this source of income is not shaken by natural disasters, the government signed, in October 2024, a five-year contract with the American company Identity Digital, specialized in domain registration management.
The company assumed responsibility for the technical infrastructure and transferred website hosting to a global server network, protecting the system against hurricanes and power outages.
The UK Foreign Ministry praised the agreement, stating that “Anguilla is finding innovative ways to promote economic growth and strengthen its self-sufficiency.” The statement reinforces London’s vision of the strategic role of the island, which remains under British sovereignty but with broad administrative autonomy.

Million-Dollar Auctions and a Race for the Most Valuable Domains
With the high demand, the shorter and more strategic domains have started to trade for astronomical amounts. Currently, the record belongs to Dharmesh Shah, owner of you.ai, but the market remains hot.
In July, cloud.ai was reportedly sold for US$ 600,000 (R$ 3.2 million), while law.ai reached US$ 350,000 (R$ 1.9 million) the following month. According to experts, the pace of transactions indicates that new records could be broken at any moment.
Despite the excitement, Shah believes that, in the long run, .com domains will continue to be more valued. Still, .ai has become synonymous with modernity and innovation, and companies looking to position themselves at the forefront of technology are willing to pay dearly for this digital symbol of prestige.
Domain registrations in Anguilla cost between US$ 150 and US$ 200 (R$ 796 to R$ 1,062), with renewal fees every two years. The most sought-after addresses are auctioned, yielding hundreds of thousands of dollars.
All revenue collected, minus a 10% commission from Identity Digital, goes directly to the island’s government coffers. Although the issue is treated discreetly, local sources say this partnership has already become the main engine of the new Caribbean economic miracle.
Lessons from the Pacific: The Precedent of Tuvalu
Anguilla’s success is not entirely unprecedented. The island nation of Tuvalu, in Oceania, had made a similar move by licensing its .tv domain in 1998. The agreement, initially made with VeriSign for US$ 2 million annually (R$ 10.6 million), was renegotiated after the internet’s growth, reaching US$ 5 million (R$ 26.5 million) per year.
In 2021, the country signed a new contract with GoDaddy, after considering the previous amount “insignificant” compared to the brand’s potential.
But Anguilla took a different approach: instead of selling the rights for a fixed amount, it established a revenue-sharing model, ensuring growing profits as the market expands. This flexible format is considered one of the secrets to the island’s success in the digital landscape.
The Golden Future of Anguilla
As the number of .ai domains approaches the one million mark, expectations grow that the money raised will be reinvested in infrastructure, health, and sustainable tourism.
Among the projects on the agenda is the construction of a new international airport, capable of increasing visitor traffic and consolidating Anguilla as a luxury destination — and now also a global tech hub.
The information was released by the BBC, which closely follows the economic transformation of the territory. According to experts cited by the broadcaster, Anguilla represents “a rare case where the digital revolution has turned into a direct benefit for a small population, previously dependent solely on tourism.”
The Anguilla Arch, an impressive rock formation in the Caribbean Sea, remains a natural symbol of the island. But now, it is the .ai that draws the new arc of prosperity over this small paradise, connecting its beaches to the large corporations of Silicon Valley.
