The DeLorean, Under New Management, Will Start Producing New DMC-12s, Which In This New Version Will Be An Electric Car. Learn More About It.
According to information from the website Quatro Rodas, the new incarnation of DeLorean had a nice surprise when it discovered that, exactly on the day the iconic DMC-12 turned 40 years old, the law for the production of small-scale automotive vehicles was finally approved by the U.S. government, enabling the dream of resuming production of the vehicle that became famous as Dr. Brown’s time machine to become real, with an additional novelty: it will be an electric car.
The DMC-12 was marked by boldness, with its gullwing doors and its innovative design for the time, in addition to being made of stainless steel, which made it much more expensive to produce and condemned the company to bankruptcy. The DMC-12 has always been the dream of many collectors, logically due to the movie.

The change in the law has made it easier for replicas of classic vehicles to be produced, as long as they meet certain limits, which include vehicle emissions.
This led the company to decide to innovate with an electric engine.
Despite the good news, not everything is hoverboards and clock towers, as the challenge is now different: the small manufacturer will have to reorganize many of its suppliers, as while waiting for the change in legislation (which has been in discussion and negotiation since 2015), the small manufacturer lost a significant number of suppliers.
“Some suppliers we had in mind closed their businesses during the pandemic. Others were absorbed by companies that made it clear that small-scale component production is not something they are interested in. There is a lot of work that will have to be redone,” commented the passionate owner of DeLorean.
Back to the Past with the Engine of the Future: This Will Be an Electric Car
One of the main requirements of the new law regarding small-scale replicas of classic vehicles involves the maximum number of units per year (325), in addition to the carbon emissions per car, which is quite low.

To avoid worrying about the carbon emission prerequisite and to add another differentiator to this incredible car, they will leave the factory as electric cars.
There isn’t much information about the specifics of the new DMC-12, but being a limited edition car, with very few units being produced, and probably featuring cutting-edge electric motor technology, it certainly won’t be popular among the characteristics of this car.
What Lies Behind This Fascination for the DeLorean?
The DeLorean is the realization of the vision of a man ahead of his time, John DeLorean. According to Wikipedia, he was an inventor, automotive engineer, and became widely known for developing the first muscle car, the Pontiac GTO.
He opened his company in Detroit, but the factory was only opened in Northern Ireland. It lasted a short time, as John was much more of an engineer and a dreamer than a businessman.
Still, his cars became a true craze after one was chosen as the time machine in the movie Back to the Future, where the Doctor Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, justified the choice of the car with the phrase, “If you’re going to build a time machine in a car, why not do it with some style?”
Following this sentiment, thousands of men and women compete for the few DMC-12s produced so far, as the original factory was only open for 2 years.
